NWN crashing need help please!
« on: August 19, 2013, 04:12:26 pm »

Hello, i've been having a lot of issues with NWN diamond. Was feeling nostalgic as I use to have NWN and both expansions years ago but have since lost the CD's (i can't remember i think i let a friend borrow it it's been years) So anyways I just purchased off GOG.com a few days ago. Finally got around to installing this on my PC and first problem I had was an error with the "atioglxx.dll". I did a lot of research online, found the problem was I had a newer version of the catalyst drivers for my old ATI Radeon card. I did the "fix" of replacing the "atioglxx.dll" file into the maine NWN folder.

It booted up, seemed to run okay initially. I ran around in one of the included user made modules, game was fairly smoothe. I saved the game, exited and restarted. Then i started getting this ridiculous "ntdll.dll" error and it would crash upon loading a saved game, loading any module (campaign, and included modules w/ the expanisions and patches) It gives me that error upon trying to create my character, etc.

Here's what else I've done initially I thought maybe it was still an issue with the video card drivers. I went and uninstalled my driver rebooted in safe mood used driver sweeper to remove all leftover driver info, rebooted again.
loaded up windows again, reinstalled an OLDER catalyst driver so i wouldn't even have to mess with the "atioglxx.dll"
It seemed to run fine as well but again same issue with "ntdll.dll" I dont know what to do.

Here are my specs, (this is an old PC. I usually game on consoles now but keep in mind this use to run NWN, SoU, HotU, just fine years ago)

Game Version: NWN Diamond from GOG.com
Game Language: English
Retail or Digital: Direct 2 drive
Processor Manufacturer: AMD
Processor Type: Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
Processor Speed: 1.81 Ghz
Operating System: Windows XP SP3
System RAM: 1.00 GB RAM
Video Card Manufacturer: ATI
Video Card Model: Radeon 9550
Video Card RAM: 256MB
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst 8.10 (was originally using version 10.2)
Sound Card Manufacturer: Creative Labs
Sound Card Model: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 zs
Sound Card Driver Version: 6.00.0001.1377
CD/ROM Type: CD/DVD/RW, IDE

I checked event log and it says : "Faulting application nwmain.exe, version 1.6.9.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x000111de."

Now the messages are always the same from the previous ntdll.dll error crashes except the fault address sometimes says diff things.. dunno if that makes a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a lost. Spent the whole day trying to troubleshoot this on my own, I'm about ready to just reformat my PC ugh.                HI '<img'>

I remember (sort of) this issue with atioglxx.dll ... and that fix did indeed work at one time but not anymore (at least I do not have it on my computer anymore and NWN is running. In fact, I think (note, I think, not I am positive) that it ended up causing problems unless it was a specific driver set you were running.

I would suggest deleting that file (or rename it atioglxx.old) and then following the sticky at the top of this page making sure you run the 1.69 critical update.

I currently have the latest ATi mobile drivers and NWN is running fine. I have seen reports that the most current (for desktops I presume) don;t fully support NWN and you need to go a couple of drivers back. I'll try to dig up that comment so I can tell you exactly which ones. (It may depend on which windows you are running too.)

I've been a bit out of the loop that last year or so, but hopefully this'll get you started.

Have fun '<img'>

You might also want to try downloading and installing the SDK for DirectX 9.0c. I know lots of people that are having issues with Windows XP across multiple platforms and with multiple applications. The IT guys at work said it was because XP was no longer a stable OS and they upgraded to Win 7 (junking the machines that couldn't run Win 7).

The page linked below says it all - XP support ends on April 8, 2014. My guess would be that, as is typical with Microsoft, that support has already pretty much ended and that the OS will just continue to degrade over the next few months.

You might not like hearing this, but XP is such a crappy OS. It was great in its day, but in the current realm of PCs and OS's. Windows 7 is a far better solution. Ill pretty much guarantee you that this issue will not happen on Windows 7.

Is upgrading not a solution?

also, have you tried uninstalling and reisntalling the game?  Sounds like to me somthing got corrupted.
