Windows 7 & graphics / toolset issues
« on: August 29, 2012, 04:48:31 pm »

Hello all. I recently got a new desktop with Windows 7 and installed NWN Platinum. Per the instructions in self-help section, I made it XP service pack 3 compatible, gave all permissions and run it as administrator, etc.

After the 4 discs, I installed CEP 2.4 manually and then ran the 1.69 Critical Rebuild. I know I placed the 2.4 files correctly.

Upon launching NWN modules built with all CEP versions, the gameplay is incredibly choppy and there are white trees, animals, buildings, etc all over, even if they weren't placed in the module upon construction. Also: NWN Toolset won't even launch, saying it cannot due to a problem with the 3D graphics, something or other.

I tried installing 64 bit NVidea graphics & sound drivers but neither were compatible. (???)

The computer has 3Gigs RAM, quad processers, 64 bit, 2.4 something GhZ, etc. etc. Not a computer guy, but this thing should run this program!

I love & miss NWN. Is there anyone who can shed some light on this please.. 'Image

So how is NWN running without CEP? Your PC is way better them my own so that cant be the problem here.

The chronological age of computers is totally meaningless when it comes to playing games.  NWN1 is very old (over ten years), and it was designed to run with OpenGL, which simply isn't supported well at all any more.  You really need a graphics card from nVidia, and it would be best if the card was two or three years old now, along with its drivers (also old).

Actually, I think the problem was with the 1.69 Critical Rebuild. CEP 1.5 ran fine, no problems at all, but when I upgraded the NWN version to 1.69, and installed CEP 2, the problems started. I believe that CEP 2 and above won't work without the Critical Rebuild, right? I'm not sure exactly what kind of graphics card I have but I can check it out. If I pick up an NVidea card, you think that will fix it? I'll try to get more info for you

               OK, got some information here:

Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz
3072 MB RAM

ATI Raedon HD 3450
internal DAC (400 MHz)
1531 MB memory
1024x768 (32bit) (85Hz)

Driver version 8.56.1.16

I'm going to try to DL an updated driver for the above graphics card. Hopefully that will work. I'm stumped as to why NWN 1 geeks on this machine. Again, I'm not very computer savvy, so I may have installed the 1.69 Critical Rebuild at the wrong time, or maybe I'm missing another patch, I dunno. Any input will be most welcome.

OK, I downloaded the driver & installed it. I also added CEP 1.52 as I was missing some haks to play an old CEP 1 mod. Still have the problem. Very choppy gameplay & white placeables scattered around. Toolset will not load at all. I suspect that it is the 1.69 Critical Rebuild. Maybe I got a bad Crit Rebuild application? Any suggestions would be most appreciated...

I dont think that the critical rebuild patch can mess up vanilla nwn. There is no change in the engine to my knowledge and xp3 adds almost only a massive amount of content. And the white texture issue is because the model textures are missing or corrupt. If nwn runs ok/good (what it should) without cep then thats definately the problem and i dont know how to fix CEP related issues...

CEP 1.52 is NOT compatible with 1.69. There is a hak on the vault that will make CEP1.x work with 1.69. CEP 2.x should be installed after the Critical Rebuild. Some things to do...

1. Check your override it should have textures in it from the 1.69 patch.

2. Are you using XP Service Pack 3 Compatability Mode for the game and tileset. If so, try using Service Pack 2 mode.

3. See if turning off shiny water and/or anti-aliasing helps.

The behavior you are describing - white object - is consistant with missing textures. Also custom content can sometimes make the game run choppy. Try running the original game or one of the expansions. If you get this behavior still I would try a reinstall.

OK, I'm going to switch to Service Pack 2 & turn off shiny water & anti-aliasing. I'm 99% sure the override folder was empty. I checked it twice, I believe. I will make these changes as I reinstall it (on Service Pack 2) I will also make sure CEP 2 is installed after the Critical Rebuild.

I did install vanilla NWN Platinum and CEP 1.x and a CEP mod ran perfectly at one point. It was after I installed CEP 2 / 1.69 when the problems came up. I'm looking for the hak to make CEP1.x work with 1.69 to no avail. I will try this once more and come back with a more detailed description of what I did. Thanks again for your help

OK, guys: I just reinstalled Platinum and tested it. Game ran fine. (I also made the changes to XP Service Pack 2, etc etc.) I then installed the 1.69 Critical rebuild and tested gameplay & it was choppy as h**l. (No white placeables, but I didn't install any CEP) I also triple checked the Override folder and it did indeed have files in it. ALSO: It may help you to know that I downloaded the 1.69 CR application, took it to my computer (Which does not have internet access) loaded it on there and then ran it.

SO: Do you think I got a corrupted 1.69? Is there a problem with my downloading the application instead of running it from online? I hope this information helps, 'cause I want to play some CEP mods!! Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks for your responses in advance.

OK, I reinstalled Platinum again with discs only, totally vanilla. I changed to XP 2 compatability with full administration permissions, etc. etc. I then updated to NWN version 1.67. However, when I tried updating to 1.68, it said that I couldn't use the patch with the current install. I did not install any CEP, and am seeing that I have to have V. 1.68 to install CEP2! Should I skip 1.68 and install 1.69? Not sure how I can install CEP 2 when 1.68 won't even work. Help please?
