NWN in Win7 64Bit
« on: December 27, 2011, 02:03:36 am »

I too could not run NWN diamond from GOG &, separately from
Gamersgate, in my Win7 64bit 4Gb memory system with Nvidia GTX460SE
graphics & Realtek sound.
I tried ALL the various suggestions
from many different forums to no avail. The game would not fire up,,
although NWmain32.exe is in Task Manager processes.
I then disabled Realtek sound drivers & the game works, minus sound, of course.
It also works when I disable sound in nwn.ini
But it does NOT work when I disable sound driver & use an external USB sound device.
So I've somewhat determined where the problem lies for my installation but can't yet resolve it.
Any suggestions, please?

Further to the above the sound problem is with either onboard or USB sound enabled so, as things stand, I must disable sound in nwn.ini or the system sound for the game to run.

I have the NWN Diamond edition in box, and it was setup for windows 98, ME, 2000, Xp. only. Vista and Windows 7 need other work in the NWN.INI folder to make it work right. Unless you buy the Neverwinter Nights Compleate set. NWN 1, NWN 2. In one box. then it is set up for windows vista and windows 7.

NWN Diamond is the complete set & it can be made to run in Win7 usually according to most of the forums I have seen. It's just that non of the suggestions I have seen seem to fit my problem ( I haven't seen that there is an issue relating to sound before ).
I've many times tried all the hints re installation folder, admin rights, altering nwn.ini & nwnplayer.ini, starting with nwmain.exe, stopping virus scanner & (re)-installing dirextX 9c. I believe that there must be something out of the game that I should alter on my system, but I cannot get to what??? All I know is that it works only when sound is disabled.
Thank You.

NWN has always had issues with onboard sound chip drivers. Especially Realtek. It's not a Win7 thing.
The only ways I know of to get around onboard chip failures in NWN is to either buy a sound card or play without sound.
Onboard chips have caused everything from stuttering/lagging games to crashes to total NWN failure, such as you have. I had this same problem with an old Win XP laptop in 2004. NWN would fail to load until I turned off sound.

A quick Google search for "NWN Realtek" will probably return a lot of history regarding this, but I've never found a proper solution. 'Tis a bug that was never squashed.

For the record, I have Win7 X64 and I didn't have any issues at all. I installed to 'C:Neverwinter Nights\\NWN' from my original cd collection (I bought every expansion individually), ran the critical re-build, set the executables to run as Admin and XP compat mode, set the ini's to use core 2. It ran fine on the first try.

I do not use on board sound.

NWN hates RealTek onboard audio. Granted some of the chipsets do work with NWN, but its hit or miss (more miss than hit). The only real solution is to get a soundblaster card. You can find all kinds of them on ebay for $20 or less.

               Thanks for the responses.
I've tried turning off onboard sound via the bios & then using a usb sound device I have. This is the only game I've encountered that works with neither. I've recently got just about all the D & D games installed & they all work. Just not NWN !! I give up for now. Will try again another time.
