A Slew of Problems [read only if you are brave!]
« on: October 20, 2011, 03:38:44 am »

Okay so I'm running NWN on windows vista, I have the GOG version, and I went and I downloaded (only) the newest CEP 2.4 (was I supposed to download 2.3 too? The vault download page is so damn confusing when it comes to figuring which link I should click to download the CORRECT CEP)...so...here are my problems:

>When I log into a server, I try using the "tell" command by clicking someone's picture, nothing appears in the text box; as you know, the user's name is supposed to appear so that you can tell to someone. I get nothing. Later when I tried to tell to the DM of the server, it worked, and then I started telling from the player list and that worked too, but when I went and tried it again IN the chat, where they have the little avatar of the other user that you click to tell, it still wouldn't do anything. Is this a bug or something or did I do something wrong?

>When I put on a cloak no cloak appears on my character. What am I doing wrong? I think last time it was a graphical issue; I am running a laptop with a resolution of 1366x768, using stock intel graphics drivers that are from the manufacturer. How can I fix this issue?

>Finally, and this is a huge problem, I can't walk through doors. Like the other issues above, this isn't server related; I've been server hopping all over the place to test it out and I find this is a problem no matter where I go. The blue highlight that is supposed to appear when you are supposed to go through a door isn't there, and most of the time, neither is the door; it's just a big rectangle of black space into nothing @_@...I have a feeling that this, along with probably the rest of my issues, is a CEP problem. But I wanted to ask here because I'm completely at a loss at what's wrong. ''

Here are my PC stats as well, if that helps any:

There is a small bug in NWN which makes it so that doesn't work if the other player used a voice command. He actually has to write text, then it works for you to click the small portrait.

Did you try installing the 1.69 patch? ...it wont hurt to do it at least...

Here is a page that has the link (get the correct version for you - windows and all expansions...)

Not really sure here....but a missing 1.69 patch could have something to do with it...as well as some other things.

- You did NOT install the game into the normal programs folder right? (it needs to be in another folder so that you can run the game as "administrator". Both nwn.exe and nwmain.exe need to be set to run as admin)
- What graphics card are you using and if it is an Nvidia did you manually get the latest drivers for it?
- You could try running in XP SP3 compatibility mode.
- Try removing some graphics enchancement settings in the game (graphics then advanced).
- There are also a couple of other things to try if all that doesn't work....

- Oh yes, for starters, stay away from CEP servers. Just to make sure it all works....and that the problem isn't because of that. If you did the correct CEP installation you shouldn't have problems with just leaving it there...cause you didn't place stuff in the override folder right? (note that the 1.69 patch actually places some files in the override but you can ignore them, leave them I mean)

The server I tipped you about doesn't use CEP or any other HAK's...

Cloaks - ASFAIK CEP 2.3 and 2.4 require your game to be patched to 1.69. Being its from GOG you should have ver.s 1.69. However, early GOG versions had a borked 1.69 patch file. Run the critical rebuild. Also make sure that the game is NOT installed in the Programs (x86) folder. If it is move it to the C:/ drive. Your root folder name should be C:/NeverwinterNights/NWN/ - all your NWN files and folders go into that hierarchy.

Doors - sounds to me like a 2da issue between CEP and the server. Are the servers you are visiting running the same version of CEP you have and - this may sound like I'm saying you're dumb, but I'm not - do you have all the haks required to play? Most servers make a top-hak that contains server-specific 2da changes that override the CEP version you are using.

No. Definitely a CEP issue if it's hack related. The server wouldn't let him log in with a missing hack file. But CEP has several different versions of the the same hack. Theoretically they're all backwards compatible, though.

Right - my bad, if the hak was missing, it would throw a module load error.

I'm stumped. Can't find anyone with the same problem in regards to going through doors. I'll wager there's something in the legacy forums. Let's hope they get them archived and posted soon.

Okay thanks superfly I uninstalled and am reinstalling now.

Hopefully this works '<img'>

thanks Pstemarie and Urk!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

okay it's working, but now I'm afraid to install the CEP again lol

Why should I stay away from CEP PW's?

do you have a link to the most up to date on here on the forums? or am I supposed to just not use it? lol

Also to you other guys, um, I installed correctly, I know how to do haks right and everything, but yeah, I think most likely it was the fact that I installed CEP 2.4. I know a lot of people say that a lot of PW's catch up on the latest CEP but that's never the case with the servers that I play on I think. I remember about a year ago I installed a "latest CEP update" that had only been out for about 2 weeks and after installing it I tried going on my favorite PW's and everything was just effed up so I should just learn not to update...unless the PW I play on tells me they have updated or not...':?'

Heh...I didn't mean for you to become afraid of CEP or using HAK's and stuff in general. Typically theese files will be installed in the HAK and TLK directiories and will have no effect whatsoever on other modules/servers you play (that do not use thoose HAK's).

I just meant you should concentrate playing on servers that worked to sort the problem out.

The thing with CEP and HAK's in general is that some servers for some reason don't describe well or exactly what HAK's you really need...sometimes they post links to like the CEP page on the vault and then hope for the best..

CEP should be backwards compatible....but it isn't. At least not 2.0 <--> 2.2. I don't know about 2.3 <--> 2.4...

Anyway....as I said....this boils down to what files the server instructed you to get...and there is where it usually fails...

Are these door problems with door that area transitions, or just go to the next tile? the reason is, you may have a corrupt tile hak. If it is corrupt, it may allow you to log in, but wouldn't actually work in game.
When you download cep2.4a, your suppose to get all the versions of cep2. Even if you already have them. Because of the way they released the latest, you have to download all of it. If because it is so huge and a problem, like a corrupt file happens, you have to re- download all of it and hope it works. I had to download it 4 times before I got a non-corrupted set. The good news is, the cep2 team seems to have taken a break from making any changes to it, so your probably safe once you get it from having to download it all again.
