« on: October 05, 2011, 09:05:47 pm »

I did some searcing on this but could not find a clear answer I recently purchased NWN diamond and attempted to create a new account but I get the error that teh master server isn't responding. I heard about the hack....is the master server still down or is there another connectivity issue I may not be aware of?

Anyway if you have any information that might hlep me to regester my acccount I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

I also recently bought a legit (new) copy of NWN-1 (with the key codes and everything).  I've downloaded all the patches up to 1.69.  But now when I try to login-in from the game (or even try to create a new account) to play NWN over the internet I get a message that I can't connect to the Master Server.

Is there a problem with the Master Server (I've heard about the hack and even rumors that the game is no longer going to be supported by GameSpy)?

Or are there some firewall issues that I have to deal with?  As far as I know, I've done everything on my end to be able to play, disabling the Windows Firewall and telling the Norton AV to allow communication between NWN and the internet.

So is there something further that I should be trying?

The Master server is still down as far as I know.

While it is down do not try to create a new account, Just pick an account name and log in with it.  When/If the master server comes back up you can worrie about regestering your account then.  You may want to give the server admins a heads up about the status of your account login. That way when the master server is back online there will be fewer questions if you have trouble regestering your account name and need you characters moved to an account name you are able to regester.

Does this effectively mean that CDKeys are no longer needed to play online, and we can log in with any username/password?

If not - ignore the rest of this message.

Wow - I didnt realise.
However, doesnt this pose a security risk to other players.

Whats to stop other players from trying to log in with another users name, and then accessing their Server Vault on a server.

Characters are stored with Username as the unique identifier, not CDKey, if CDKeys are now irrelevent, doesnt this pose a security risk, if it allows someone to log in with any username and password combination?

I am pretty sure CD-Keys are handled by Game Spy and not the master server.

As to security:  Securing Your Server Without Master Server Authentication

You still need a unique set of keys because the game server will reject anybody using keys that somebody else on that server is using.  Some (all?) PW's block the default GoG keys.

Whats to stop other players from trying to log in with another users name, and then accessing their Server Vault on a server.

Securing accounts is now the responsibility of the PW's.  Either use a Master Server emulator (see elven's posts on nwnx.org) or FunkySwerve's scripts in NWN General discussion here.

..., and we can log in with any username/password?

Remember that tick box to tell Bioware to lock the keys to a single username?  Completely useless, never worked.  You still needed to have keys that Bioware would approve and a password to match the username.

Nope GameSpy provides lobbying services only.  Key and password authentication used to be the Master Server.

Correct.  But it is still game spy that tracks what CD-Keys are in use.  Correct?   Meaning that "CD-Key in use. Try again in 5 minuts"  message that is a pain in the but at times.

Nope, the Master Server maintained a global list of who's playing with what keys on which server and would reject the request if the keys were still marked inuse on another server.

The game server itself checks to see if somebody tries to join with keys that somebody already logged in is using.  This was either to reduce the load on the MS or to make sure that those who figured out how to block requests to the MS still needed unique keys.  If you crashed out and tried to rejoin that server before it realizes you're gone you can still get that message especially if you try to log in with a different username.
