HDMI...the biggest scam ever?
« on: October 02, 2011, 06:17:07 pm »

Has anyone got the HDMI cable to work on their computer?

This is what usually happends to me (yes I have had EXACTLY the same problem with more than one computer).

So..I buy one new LED computer screen 27" that says it uses HDMI.

I buy one computer that ALSO claims to have HDMI.

Then I buy a cable that is supposed to use HDMI as well.

All happy happy joy joy so far.

But when I try the HDMI cable it fits into the screen but NOT into the computer...*scratching my head here*...umm the computer said it had HDMI right? I find an ADAPTER though that makes the HDMI cable fit into the adapter and THEN into the computer.

For a moment there is rejoice of having solved the problem but it is abruptly destroyed by the fact that it doesn't work...at all...no picture what so ever....the screen says no cable it in....doh.

The solution to the problem is to use the stoneage connector cable that comes with the screen. Of course that ALSO needs a an adapter to fit into the computers new strange looking socket.

How can the computer manifacturing industry be so non-organized and still survive?

I was amazed that the sound worked from start at least. That is usually a totally neglected part of the computers.

It's all about the videocard. There is no scam. Unless it is a recent model, not necessarily VERY new, but from Nvidia's GTS 250 up (and not all models), you should check the model of the card to see if it has the HDMI port.

If your Monitor has more then one type of connections (i.e Digital, Analog, HDMI), the monitor may not be set to detect and change source automaticaly, so you have to change the source by pressing the "Source" button on your monitor to see if you still don't get an image on the HDMI connection(source) while your computer is booted up.

Might be worth checking.

Ahh..its true what you're saying Lord Sully. I actually didn't think of that.

However when I checked that source thingie I see that it is set to "auto", so it should have actually recognized the connection...

The only way I can change it is to "manual"...don't know exactly what that does...but yeah...maybe I could actually fiddle around with it to make it work.

Is the picture supposed to get better/faster?

No not really. It's the same as digital... well from my experience, I prefer Digital over HDMI. The only real difference with HDMI is that sound can also be delivered through the same wire/interface. If your monitor has speakers, then it could possibly be useful, otherwise it's not that important.

Actually SVGA is the analogue connection and HDMI is the digital.

Anyway...thanks a lot for your tips. I tried again and solved it now. I just made sure the computer was properly started before plugging in the HDMI cable and it took some time but it actually found the screen.

However...I can't see any improvement in performance...yet.

Yes, HDMI is also digital, but the large white connectors on a video card or a PC motherboard (integrated graphics) is Digital. The only Analog connection is the "Dsub -15 pin" which is commonly
represented in Blue on the inside of the connector as is both ends of its proper cable.
