Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and Neverwinter Nights
« on: September 19, 2011, 01:34:10 pm »

Greetings and salutations once again. I am having problems with my Neverwinter Nights installation.

After destroying two hard drives and a power supply in a single bound, I managed to get another computer running. Reinstalling Windows first, I chose to go with 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. I had the 32-bit edition running on my previous computer, and since I upgraded the processor, I thought I would upgrade the operating system as well. (No, I am highly unwilling to convert to any version of Linux at this time to try to run any games.)

The installation of Windows 7 went through without many issues. Installation of Neverwinter Nights (as one might expect) went through a few thankfully minor glitches. It was ... frustrating at the very least. Now I have everything installed (or so I thought), but now I cannot use windowed mode. I am not sure why this is. On Windows 7 x32 Ultimate Edition, this was not a problem. I simply went to the forums, looked up how to code things into the nwn.ini file, and it took. Here wih the 64-bi edition of the operating system, not so much.

The game itself runs as long as I have downloaded the right *.hak files, but placing it into an actual windowed mode does not work. If I hit ALT+ENTER, it removes me from the game entirely. I have tried changing my resolution within the game and then doing it, but it does not change the situation. Any idea what I have done wrong?

my statistics for the computer:
motherboard - Gigabyte EP43-UD3L (socket 775)
Pentium E6600 @ 3.06Ghz
4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2
1024MB GeForce GT 220 (ASUStek Computer Inc)
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
77GB Western Digital WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1 ATA Device

I think I managed to download both DirectX 9.0C and DirectX 11, but I am not sure how I would go about checking that at all.

A great many games will crash totally if minimized without pausing the action.  You must open a menu and allow it to finish loading before attempting to force any external change onto the game.

ncidentally, you should be aware that you do not currently have a Game Quality graphics card.  The GT 220 was merely a borderline video card in essentially the same relation to the GT 240 as the 9400 GT was to the 9600 GT, just not quite in the Medium class, only on the borderline between Low End Business, and Mainline Gaming.

(Given NWN1's comparative great age for a game still relatively popular, that card probably does very well for you in it.  I used a Geforce Ti-500 back in the day when I played the game first.)

I was using an ATI Radeon 3800 series graphics card before this. As well, the processor was a single-core Pentium class, the operating system was Windows 7 x32 Ulitmate, and the amount of RAM was the same. The motherboard was also a Gigabyte EP43-UD3L. So now, my question remains the same: why can I not get a windowed mode to work for Neverwinter Nights?

You WENT BACKWARDS from a decent video card to a newer, but slower card now.

Have you attempted to put the MENUED game into a windowed state?
