Windows 7 wordpad says, Access to nwn.ini was denied
« on: August 31, 2011, 05:55:23 pm »

How do I change it so I can edit the ini files?
I run as administrator and unset read only and still I get

---------------------------
WordPad
---------------------------
Access to F:\\Program Files\\NeverwinterNights\\nwn.ini was denied.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

You can try unchecking Read Only on the Neverwinternights folder itself though it really shouldn't matter.  You didn't specify your OS so maybe try a different compatibilty mode like XP SP2.  How about using NotePad? Same diagnostic?

I've heard of this before and seen it addressed but unforunately... well... no use crying over spilt milk, is there?

edit:  Hmmm.... just noticed it is located on the F:drive rather than the C:drive.  Try copying it over to the C:drive and see if the same problem occurs when you try to edit there.

When I use notepad I get pretty much the same result when I try to save it.

---------------------------
Notepad
---------------------------
Access is denied.

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Copying to C: makes no difference.

unchecking Read Only in the Neverwinternights folder doesn't do anything.

After you open it up in one of the MS editors, can you "Save as..."?  If so, try saving it as a .txt file and then editting it. If that works, you can simply overwrite the original ini.   Does seem  a very tedious procedure but am trying for any sort of work-around until you solve the REAL problem.

There may be a setting somewhere in your Windows profile (maybe under File Types???)  that places restrictions on any file with an .ini extension. If so, that is an OS issue and has nothing to do with NWN.  Do a search for any file with the .ini extention on your machine that is not related to NWN and try to edit it.  What happens?

edit: btw, if it is OS-related, using a non-MS editor should solve the problem.  There are loads of freeware text editors out there.

               By the way...

Also try opening your word processor/text editor first before hunting down the file.
Right click your text editor and use "Run As Administrator."
That should solve your problem. The moment the computer is "reminded" that you are the one in charge (the administrator), your text editor will allow you to alter and save the file.

Also, make sure when changing write permission on properties that you hit the "Apply" tab.
Then right click and select properties again and see if the "Read-only" box is still unchecked.

Disregard this if it is too obvious, but sometimes the simplest solutions get overlooked.
