10-20 FPS NWN: Diamond in Windows XP
« on: February 23, 2011, 04:09:56 am »

Can somebody help me figure out why my game is running so slow?  I can run Starcraft 2 on medium settings at 30-45 fps and yet NWN: Diamond is running much worse.  I've tried lowest settings, highest settings, I've turned off shiny water, I've changed the resolution a bunch of times, I've tried it in Windowed mode...nothing has made any difference.

Here's my NWNconfig:

I would say that with that NVidia GO 7600 which is barely a midrange gaming card of that time,

running at full native resolution is really not helping.

But, if you insist, there are 3 configuration options that you can play with...

1- AA(Anti-Aliasing)

2-Environment shadows

3-Shiny water (this one being the least resource grub of the 2 previous)

If I were you, I'd try leaving shiny water "ON", AA no more then (2X) and turning Envirment Shadows "OFF"

See what it does for you.

Definitely the video "card", but also the ram which at 2 gb should be enough, but if you've got lots running in the background without knowing it, perhaps not.

I've run the game at the lowest resolution and the highest resolution, it hasn't made any difference.

I've tried turning off all of the shadows, with no discernable difference.

I changed the graphics settings from "Best" to "Fastest" and Textures to the lowest possible setting - it makes no difference.

I'm not sure why you think the video card is such a problem, since NWN was a relatively old game when this graphics card came out.  Yes, Go 7600 was a midrange card when it came out...which was a few years after NWN.  As I implied in my original post, I've run much newer, more demanding games with higher FPS.

p.s.  I just tried what you mentioned (AA x 2, environmental shadows off, shiny water on) and it didn't really make a difference.  I still get 13-15 fps when my character is just standing still, doing nothing.  Worse in larger areas and especially while moving.

The fact that the graphic card was produced and released after NWN came out does not make it a powerful graphic card. Also this is a "Laptop" discreet graphic card as oppose to a Desktop one and the destop one while more powerful then its Laptop counterpart, a desktop 7600 GT which I used to have didn't run NWN smoothly with everything on high at high display resolution... so I'm not supprised.

I see that you're using the third party Omega drivers... are you changing settings at the Driver control panel? or are you changing settings of the game exclusivly?

Did you install the critical rebuild patch?

- the 1.69 critical rebuild patch from http://nwn.bioware.c...port/patch.html

NWN is a bit of a pig on performance really. I agree with others, that is pretty much expected performance on a 2GHz laptop with 7600 Mobile graphics.

I only get 20-40 fps (depending where I am) on my 3.2GHz Q9400 Desktop, with an 8800GT.

NWN needs both CPU and GPU and it still seems to turn in dismal numbers. Though people really need to use common tools/location to report FPS, because module/location will have massive impact and FPS is all over the place even when standing still.

Example:
Just starting a new game at the gatehouse, Chapter three of Hordes (because there is no intro and this is more challenging than other start areas of the original modules).

I run ~trace fps.  I believe the value in brackets is the Low score and it will be in the 20's, the running counter is all over the place mostly in the 30' with occasional dips into 20's or jumps into 40's. So I say 20-40 fps here. But that is just standing still doing nothing, there is no frame rate stability, which is strange.

Third party modules are often poorly optimized so frame rate will dip even more in places.  If I were to include best to worse, it would probably be 10-100 fps... So we really need state where we are when we report frame rates.

I've been using Fraps to report framerates, mainly in the prelude to NWN chapter 1.

Another thing I don't understand with what all of you are saying is, if it is really a performance issue and my graphic card just isn't good enough, then why doesn't the performance change any when I lower or raise the graphics settings?  It has remained more or less exactly the same whether the settings are as high as possible or as low as possible.

BTW, I'm using 3rd party omega drivers for my graphics card because the driver support for laptop video cards isn't great.  these 3rd party drivers are the newest i could find (new ones for the "Go" 7600 are not available through Nvidia).  All of the changes I'm making to the graphics are through the graphics options in-game, and also in the "configure" panel from the startup menu.

Ok we didn't say your GO 7600 was not good enough, but what we are saying is you lack a bit of
performance power to run NWN with everything on max at highest (Native) resolution of your display.
That's all we're saying.

Now, note that FRAPs kills framerate with NWN a bit, so it may be offf the mark as to the real frame rate
you get normaly. If you are experiencing no change whatsoever when attemting to tune you config while
lowering resource demand by turning some features down of OFF, you may be suffering from something
else outside of the game. There could be a number of reasons why NWN is made to chug in your case.

But first I'suggest uninstalling the "Omega Drivers" and installing the last Nvidia Drivers for your Notebook GO 7600
to test those and see if this makes a difference, if not then we may look at other possibilities.

Let us know the result of that experiment.

Alright, I installed those drivers you linked, and everything is greatly improved.  I must thank you very much for finding those drivers (although I may look foolish if it turns out it was simple), because I had looked for a long time to find notebook drivers for my card and could only find those 3rd party ones.

The game is now running at 50-60 fps even with native resolution.  Thanks again for your help.
