Installing NWN1 for Win7/vista including patch links for all OS.

I'll post my experience setting up the game from the Diamond DVD.

The game gave a compatibility error when starting after initial install, and the update patcher could not find the 1.69 version update to download.

With the 1.66 patch on Atari's support site here http://support.atari...l-rebuild-patch, when the nwmain.exe file is set to use XP SP3 compatibility, the game will run just fine from the launcher menu without admin privileges.

With the 1.69 patch from Bioware's file site here http://files.bioware...9HotUUpdate.exe the game only runs when the nwmain.exe file is executed directly, and requires Admin privs (or as others have said, you can just switch of Windows' UAC).

You don't want to run the in-game updater because, to my knowledge, the update server no longer exists. You need to download the patch files and install them manually (well, double click the file to run the installer).

Can't comment on the 1.66 patch.

I can run my game under Win 8.1 from the Game Launcher. I just choose to create shortcuts directly to the nwnmain.exe, the Toolset, the DM Client, and the Server Host. With my new PC I have also found that it doesn't need any form of compatibility mode or admin privileges and UAC is ON. As noted in other posts, different machines with different configs get different mileage (actually you even get different results from identical setups).

For reference, my current config is:

Alienware x51

Win 8.1

Intel i5-4460 CPU @ 3.2 GHz Quad Core 4th Gen

16 MB RAM

nVidia GeForce GTX 745 w/ 4 GB GDDR5

Its a stock system with a few manufacturer upgrades. I'm starting to see a trend that the more vRAM and RAM you have the better the game performs on startup - less need for admin or compatibility modes. I also installed the DirectX SDK linked in my previous post.

I'm running into an issue trying to run NWN on my new computer build, under Windows 8.1 Pro. Running as administrator the main panel and the toolset seem to launch with no problem. However, when trying to play, the game's main menu options are unresponsive to the mouse.

I've noticed something similar on first game launch on recent operating systems (including Win 7 on my old PC and Win 8.1 on my laptop), but the mouse always came active after pressing the "alt" key. Now, however, that's not making any difference, and I can't get past the main menu.

I've tried running in XP compatability mode and that doesn't seem to help. Has anyone else had this problem, and/or does anyone know a way around it?

EDIT: I have an update on this after playing around with the settings a bit. It appears only to be a problem playing the game on higher resolutions. It works fine at 1366x768, but if I step it up to 1600x900 the mouse can no longer interact with the menus. Similarly, if I turn hardware mouse off, it works on any resolution, but the mouse appears duplicated and can no longer reach the bottom part of the screen.

I'm not sure, but I suspect it may be related to the latest (2 day old) NVIDIA driver that I just installed. In any event I can run NWN fine as long as I don't exceed 1366x768, which is a slight but not fatal inconvenience.

Thanks -- Andarian

Have you tried running nwmain.exe directly and used "run as admin?" I have this issue if I start the game through the launcher.

I hadn't before, but I just tried it now. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to make a difference.

In reference to your edit - I'm running at max resolution for my monitor (1440 x 900) under the latest nVidia drivers.

Just a thought but make sure your hardware mouse is enabled.

I am running Windows 8.1, and I am now able to run the game in Windows XP (SP 2) mode now that I have installed the NWNEnglish1.69HotUUpdate.exe file from the first page of this thread.

Is there a link for the NWNEnglish1.69HotUUpdate.exe file that actually works? All that I have tried lead to pages removed or the files time out or fail. Any other 1.69 versions when trying to update say not compatible with my Diamond version. Currently at the 1.66 version and launches fine, but wondering if I will run into problems later if not fully patched.

I can download the 2 windows versions I can't use, the HotU version immediately fails and I can restart the download and it goes to around 40mb then fails again and can't be restarted. With only version 1.66 and the instability, lacking all the patched in fixes and additions from 1.69 and then no modules or community stuff requiring 1.69 I guess I will pass on playing this on the new PC.

Can you use another PC to download it perhaps, then transfer it over to the new PC?

Are you downloading it and saving or trying to run or open it as it downloads. It needs to download first, then run the exe to update.

Just tried now on another computer and that link leads to a page reset time out page. I am just trying to download the file and then install it. I have the 1.69 version installed on a 5 yr old laptop and also on a 10 or more yr old pentium desktop, so I know how the process is suppose to work. Thanks for trying to help, I might just attempt to move the whole install over using a flash drive.

To update I was finally able to download the file and get the patch installed. Avast has a web shield and after deactivating that I had no problem downloading the file.

This link should be posted on its own sticky.  IMO.

Thank you very much for this thread.

Using the info in this thread, I've just finished reinstalling NWN Diamond Edition single DVD release, in Win7 32bit Home Premium.

I had no idea that patch 1.69 had been released. Last time I did a reinstall 1.69 was not yet in beta. In my install stuff backups, the most recent patch I had was 1.68.
