Which Version Is Recommended....
« on: July 23, 2010, 07:49:44 am »

... for Win7 64 OS? Would the Diamond version be a nightmare to install for a Techless Ancient Player?

Attempting to follow manual directions for anything past the usual Installation makes my skin clammy with anxiety, and I have to gain a new copy for this new system in order to play.

               Bueller? Bueller? *BUMP*

Is Diamond the best for Win7 64 Bit, or is some lesser version recommended for a totally new game install?

For my sons Windows 7 laptop, I just copied over a up to date (1.69) installation from my desktop PC with Windows XP to his laptop, changed the key file entries to his version of nwn, SoU and HotU and then started up. There were some clicks to do in order to configure the installation with the much better graphics of his, which then created the needed registry keys and so far, the game runs fine.

Greetings

Thanks, but the problem with that is not only a technical problem for me, but possibly is in violation of the game EULA. That is the reason I am seeking to get a new copy before it disappears off of  the shelves.

I don't know your case, but in my case, there is AFAIKS no EULA violation because my son has his own nwn package - it's called Neverwinter Nights Legends, probably in this way only published in germany. It contains Nwn, SoU, HotU and Nwn 2. After copying, I deleted the nwncdkey.ini file and was prompted to enter the keys when I started the game. I used the keys from my sons package and everything was well.

So, if you have a working nwn installation, just copy it over to your new system. Of course, you will need a second set of keys, which means, buying another copy of nwn.

Thanks for any helpful advice.

I am assuming that you've already perused the legacy Win7 Installation thread
http://nwn.bioware.c...722534&forum=42 and perhaps sceptical whether to upgrade to v1.69?

My two centavos, then...

I would automatically download the Critical Rebuild to upgrade to v1.69 otherwise full enjoyment will be severely limited with the restrictive use of PWs and custom content most requiring a minimum of both expansions and 1.69.  Okay, that being assumed, I really don't think there will be any difference in versions as long as you have both expansions.  Except for the DVD vs. CD performance issue, once updated to the latest patch, they SHOULD all be operating on an even playing field, so to speak. No?

If it was my own scenario (blessed with a new Win7 64bit) I would find/buy the Diamond or any other DVD version because it seems (just subjectively to me) that DVD drives run smoother.

A few things to consider.  But anyways, good luck dealing with your new environment!

P.S. BTW, if you own the product, it's up to you which machine you decide to copy it to.  As the owner, you have full license to install on any machine you own in any fashion that is easiest and most reliable for you.

               Hi Elhanan.

Installing is quite easy, easier than on vista. This thread has the info, but as has been said, if you can move an already working installation onto your new machine easily with a network or flash drive or something then simply replace the keys in nwncdkey.ini (opens with notepad) to your new keys and everything will be fine.
