Which CEP?
« on: August 14, 2014, 04:06:54 am »

As builders which CEP is best to use? I would have thought 2.4 which I think is the newest one. Some of the newer modules I have downloaded have had 2.4 I believe. Some had 2.2 I think. However I thought I read somewhere that 1.? something was more widely used. I just thought the newest one would have more placeables and monsters to pick from. As a DM/Builder I would think the more the better.

Any and all insight on this would be great.

Thanks for your time.

Two groups there.

SP players and PW players.

Most PWs are using either CEP2 or custom haks, only few still using CEP1. On the other hand the vast majority of the SP modules using CEP1 because most modules were created before CEP2 came and thus players who like single player modules have CEP1.

But for a new project, there are not many reasons why not use CEP2 right away, if you decided you want any CEP. CEP1 might be a choice for an old timer builder who knows CEP1 and has no interest of learning new stuff, or for a PW admin who doesnt want to use CEP2 because of many reasons. But you are not PW admin.

As for 2.2 or 2.4, no reason not to use 2.4, by the ppls comments the 2,4 is the worst version bloated with ugly stuff, but its what players have and upcoming 2.6 will be compatible with it.

So 2.2 what better then 2.4 then?

Will 2,6 be better then 2.4? Will it be less bloated with ugly stuff?

For my self I just like the idea of having lots of good placeables and monsters to pick from. I used to DM AD&D 2nd Edition and as a DM I loved having as many monsters at my fingertips as possible. Now as a builder I like the idea of having as many nice looking placeables as possible so I can try and make areas look the way I want. So for my I would like to use some form of CEP preferably the best of of all the CEP's '<img'> .

Now for the people downloading the prefabs I upload would it be better not to have CEP in my prefabs? I'm using Medieval tileset for my cities prefab modules so far and plan to use another newer tileset or two for my rural/forest prefab modules. There for I wouldn't think to many old timers will be using my prefabs but I could be wrong (I hope so).

Thanks for your time and insight

               It's all about target audience.

Perhaps we should measure this with a poll on the new vault. My impression (right or wrong) is that new development is mainly PW, with some SP. In both camps, CEP 2 is widely used, but by no means universally, so deciding to go CEP means a better offering to a somewhat smaller audience. Forget CEP 1 - it's there to allow players to enjoy older modules.

Players really don't care which 2.x release you use, because they need 2.4 to play the latest modules, and it is backward compatible. The only possible reason to stick with 2.2 is that some developers have not upgraded. However, I don't know if that's a significant number. 2.6 will extend 2.4, which will create more incentive to upgrade.

For historical reasons, you'll see a lot of emotive comment on CEP, but, for your purposes, just select the content you want, and leave the rest; 2.4 offers the widest choice, that's all. The 2.6 team has worked hard to establish consensus for the future, too.

I personally am still looking forward to 2.6. But currently I would go 2.3 or 2.4. Our world uses 2.3 because folks with the latest (2.4) can still log in no problems (the virtue of 2.4), but 2.4 didn't offer much that we were looking for (as far as I know it pretty much only offers additional mounts, and maybe a very few other things?) Vs the converse, of using 2.4, players with 2.3 would not be able to log in (in other words less players can log in, and the only benefit is a very limited amount of extra content.)

FWIW, I came to the same conclusion Lazarus did.  I think it's best to stick with 2.3 until 2.6 comes out.  I'm sure a lot of good work went in to 2.4, but... I'm not comfortable with the way it was released.

CEP 2.60 - This version will be released on or before Sept. 8th. It will have more content (of course), with a few older models replaced with newer ones. Players using this will be able to play any module built with CEP 2 to 2.60.

CEP 2.4 - This is the current version of the CEP. Players using this can play any module built with CEP 2 to 2.4.

CEP 2.3c - It should have more content than the initial release of version 2.3. Version 2.3 came with an updater program for incremental updates to content, but as of version 2.4 that no longer works (and running it after downloading version 2.4 can actually remove content). Players using this can play any module using CEP 2 to 2.3.

Each version of CEP does mean more "bloat"...but that's a consequence of adding more content...the download is going to get bigger as more is stuffed into it.

So, for Tonden_Ockay's purposes, it sounds like 2.3 would be safer than 2.3c?

The problem the OP wants to avoid is using models and textures that PWs don't have. On the basis of two comments, that suggests 2.3 rather than 2.4. Presumably, 2.3 original has less than 2.3c. Even if 2.3c contains bug fixes, they will still work if the prefab is 2.3 and the PW is 2.3c.

On future releases, we could really use release notes, to be confident about what has changed! I don't know what possessed the old CEP team to introduce an updater, but I sincerely hope it never happens again, as we could do without this confusion!

Players can ignore this discussion, and go for 2.4 until 2.6 is released.

I am very much looking forward to 2.6 and keeping my fingers crossed. More power to you Amethyst, and all who have been involved. It's been a long time coming.
