When are there "too many" placeables?
« on: September 08, 2011, 06:09:07 pm »

This is something of a worry for me, right now i'am building part of a city in which everything is nearly placables. The count exceeds 100 already and probably will exceed 200 by the time i'm done and through with it. Thats not counting NPCs either.

Opening the area in the toolset on my laptop is already something that takes over a minute, while this can be alleviated by moving to my much beefier desktop, i'am worried that too many placeables might come back to bite me in the butt later on down the road o.O

Anyone care to share some insight here? '<img'>
If it helps, the module is intended to be a Single Player/Multiplayer module, not a PW.

keep in mind that you should avoid placing placeble on the tile edges, it will cause pathfinding problems and will cause lag faster then pure number of placeables.

Then i assume a placable that overlaps the boundary/edge of the last tile is bad then?

not if you talk about the area edge as "last" there is no path leaving a area. the effect is most obvious in area with high traffic. ie enemies or walking NPC's. it may also confuse the player click to walk. placeables in unwalkable places doesn't give this penalty.

I'm referring to the boundary the player cannot walk in/on. The darker area in the toolset where you cannot place tiles.

There is no such borders in the NWN toolset unless your talking about space outside the area that is going to be filled with border tiles when you play.

I believe he is referring to the EDGE tiles, which is what is painted outside of the walkable area and extends outwards for 10 tiles I think, by the engine automatically.  IE, tiles 17 in a 16x16 area, and you have no control over that tile via the toolset, it is automatically placed by the engine.  That tile must exist of course, and be setup properly in the edge.2da but otherwise, you have no real control via toolset for it at all.

You can't put a placeable's center on an edge tile, you MIGHT be able to place something that hangs outwards a bit, but there will be limits on how far over the edge it can be placed.

the pivot of the placeable need to be within the area, so you can create "edge" placebles with the pivot far from the actual model. and allow them to be in the edge terrain.

Incorrect, I use placeables outside of areas quite often. However, because the Adjust Location input boxes are designed to trap you inside the area it can take some effort to get stuff in the right place. If you enter a number that is outside of area bounds and hit enter right away without clicking anywhere, you can place an object anywhere.
