Editing Tilesets
« on: January 22, 2011, 09:09:31 pm »

Ok stop me now if this has already been done because I would rather use than create in this instance... But so far I have not found anything that I wanted to use in the vault...

What I want is the tileset Castle Exterior, Rural... I want to duplicate this tileset... Then I want to change the textures to match a snow setting... ditching all the grass and making the tree leaves have snow etc...  or pull the trees out all together if thats possible... then pack it all up in a hak pack to use in my module...

If this hasnt been done already then what all files do I need to rename using Duplicate NWN Tileset? I have extracted everything in the x3 BIF file to a seperate directory using NWN Explorer and am GUESSING I need to only modify the files beginning with tno01_ prefix... Is this correct? Once I rename these I can then edit the various textures then pack it up into a hak pack then add to my module good to go? I am assuming that the grass texture is the one I need to change to make it all snow right? Thats: tno01_grass.dds... Maybe if there is a tutorial concerning the patch 1.69 content on tilesets that might help as well... Google really doesnt seem to have much these days on NWN version 1... Sometimes I get lucky lol

This was a great help in geting me started btw: www.hypercubed.com/games/nwn/duptileset-app but it concerns the old content not the new... so Im stuck!

Thanks in advance!

I answered my own question on this and its no its not all the files... so they are buried somewhere god knows where... I tried packing these up as is after renaming them and the toolset shows no textures... no models and no palette selections so references to them must be elsewhere... And until I can find a decent tutorial on this its a no go... Hopefully someone will be able to direct me in the right direction... Or if theres better tools than what I am using...

This is in no ways meant as a rebuff but you're asking this in the wrong thread. To get meaningful answers you'd be much better asking in the custom content forums where people have the knowledge to help you.

Most of the people who kniow who to do this, Do not follow this board. You may get an answer here but it will most likely not be fast.  You would have better luck asking on the CC board.

As others have mentioned, posting in the custom content forum would help.

However, simple answer is that you missed the internal references to the textures used in each individual tile mdl.

each tno01_*.mdl has internal references to the different textures used for each part of the mdl.  You have to change those.  Which means you will likely have to decompress the tiles to an ascii version, THEN use something to rename the entries in each and every single tile mdl.

I use a utility called Search and Replace from Funduc software company.  I believe they have a trial version available on that site.  With it you can create a sort of macro that will read in every single .mdl file (if properly in ascii format) and then do a search/replace on every instance of whatever you specify.  It works pretty well.

You then need to have the replacement texture names handy, and know which you want to use to replace what textures etc... it's a bit time consuming, but it IS fairly easy provided you pay attention as you go along.

Good luck.

Actually, I don't think that the tileset duplicator handles the textures at all.  It just handles the tilenames etc... although I may be wrong on that, as it has been a long time since I used it.

Worm's sets are NOT the same as tno, at all.  His seasonal Forest, is just an expansion of the normal Bioware forest, and has nothing from TNO in it. (TNO == Castle Rural) and  it is so huge because it has 4 sets of the tileset in there.  Each with their own textures as well, although not all the textures were changed between seasons.  Primarily foliage and ground textures I believe).

Anyway, have fun with the project.

If I may interject, Seasonal Forest does actually have a fair bit of Castle Rural / TNO's terrains copied into it - including winter versions of those terrains.  No need to copy a new version of anything at all, unless the particular terrains you want happen not to have been included.

Here are some pictures:
