Help for solving the dm client crash
« Reply #15 on: February 27, 2011, 09:01:07 pm »

It would appear that the visualeffects.2da that comes with the CEP has over 7000 lines, but anything over 1790 - regardless of the entry - causes this DM time out problem.  WTF.

Yep, that's pretty much it.  I can't even replace the lines after 1790 with "Reserved" and blank out the other items.

So to sum up, I have two machines.  They have the exact same hak files and same module file.  Machine one is the client, and it can run the module on it's own machine and log in with the DM client or the player client.  No issues.  But trying to log into the module on the server machine works fine for players, but the DM client returns "Timed out" unless the Visualeffect.2da file in the CEP hak is 1790 lines or less.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause so bizarre a problem?

Check your hak file for any CEP haks ending in ".hak.update" vs the normal ".hak". Any found should be deleted. Then rerun your CEP Updater. Even if none are found, running the CEP Updater will likely solve the issue now that you've modified the tophak.

My guess.  Is that Visualeffect.2da  is just one of the many straws that broke the camels back.   sound like just to much information is being sent in too little time.

The only segestion I can make is to try defraging your hard drive.  Perhaps if the server can access the information faster, It may diliver it all on time.

There are no "hak, updates" files anywhere.  I've reinstalled CEP 2.3 about 5 times now.  No luck.

Additionally, defraging has done nothing as multiple computers - and computer at all trying to run the DM client cannot connect.

Is there a maximum number of areas the game allows?

It would appear there is.  I removed some areas (less used areas) and it works again.  Add them back in, and I get the time out on the dm client (but not the player client).  I have to hazard a guess and say that when it loads into the "chooser" all the area names, there must be a maximum or something.

Incidentally, it would seem that maximum is around 550 areas.

There is no known limit to the Areas, my module has over 1250 and runs just fine. You may have other issues, but it is not related to a limit on number of areas.

Be well. Game on.

No, that's not it either.  It worked fine for about 30 minutes and then it's occurring again, even with the less areas.

Found this interesting topic that seems to mimic the problem I'm having entirely.

http://nwn.bioware.c...723615&forum=83

Will try to recompile without the CRP scripts.

Yep, that was it.  Loads up fast now with no problem at all.  It was the (aptly named) crap scripts - particularly the one that tries to convert all your gold to other coins (even if you're not using any crap scripts).  Removing them all from the module worked like a charm.

Sheesh, what a pain in the you-know-what that was.
