Making silly items for gags.
« on: August 24, 2010, 03:30:26 am »

This is a really unimportant thing, just so you know at the outset.

I play NWN weekly with some friends from way, way back.  (If you're interested in more on that, I posted here asking about modules)  Every now and then, when I get a chance, I slip a "gag" item in with real items.  I make the item in the toolset, get it into my character's inventory, and then drop it in a chest when nobody's looking or whatever.  They'll be things like books with titles andcontent based on in-jokes from when we were in grade school, ugly hats with uglier names, etc.

I'd like to up the ante without actually learning how to script.  (My perl skills are wretched enough as it is.  But an item that plays a sound either constantly or on attack would be a good start.  Could Enserric the Garrulous Blade be edited to replace his talking with clips from MST3K?

Any suggestions on either how to make the gags (e.g. "just give it this poperty..."), or what kind of gags to make (e.g. "you should make a suit of armour that's all hot pink") would be of interest.

Thanks,
Dan

(Who is off to make a suit of hot pink plate mail.)

There is a built-in gag. Make a grenade-like item and give it the property "Cast Spell: Chickenegg". When you use it, it will launch a bouncing chicken at the target with the chicken squawk sound.

It uses the script x0_s3_gag which you can alter to have whatever effect you want on impact.

I have several such items in my PW.  Here's a couple of samples for you:

wand of invisibility - It's a magic wand that casts invisibility.  The gag?  The inventory icon for it is invisible.  You have to mouse over it to get the inventory space to highlight.

teleportation helm - A very inexpensive helm that appears to cast teleport an unlimited number of times.  The greedy get a little surpise when they put it on and it instant teleports itself away, leaving the PC behind.

Monster Hunting Strategies - This is a series of books written by the sage Mistak Enlore, giving the reader tips and tricks for defeating various types of enemies.  There's a book on orcs, one on dragons, one on trolls, etc.  Of course, everything in these books is terrible advice and almost all "facts" are completely wrong.

The Amethyst Dragon's post reminded me of some gag potions I made for the GodSpire PvP server years ago.

Jar of Rainbows - Randomly applies a temporary FX_DUR_GLOW_* effect to PC

Potion of Almost Invisibility - Temporarily changes a PC's appearance to Skeleton_Common (Only works on elves, half-elves, humans and half-orcs)

Immoth Blood -  Floats a countdown above the PC's head, at the end of which temporarily applies the freeze animation and ice skin VFX. (Good for striking poses with various emotes or the whirlwind feat.)

Gas House carbonated Effervescent Fizz - Uses various VFX combined with EffectDisappearAppear() to make the PC fly off for a few bubble-filled rounds then come crashing back to the ground using ANIMATION_LOOPING_DEAD_BACK. (Don't tell Willy Wonka.)

Fermented Boo Boo Bile – A bit of an inside joke, this makes the PC thrash around using multiple applications of  ANIMATION_LOOPING_DEAD_FRONT, VFX_COM_CHUNK_YELLOW_MEDIUM and various VOICE_CHAT_* (pain, cuss, and death).

Elixir of Ãœber Dueling – This potion can only be drunk when the PC is engaged in a duel. It causes them to strip off all their equipment, play the  ANIMATION_LOOPING_DEAD_BACK animation and declare: "Fear me! I am now über!"

Oh, yeah!  I've found those.  Well, I found the non-epic version "filthy rags", but still, well done, sir.

Hellball on hit kamas!  Teach those 15 attack/round monks a lesson right quick!

+20 Armor or item that harms wearer on hit. (Assumed the wearer isn't undead.)

Cursed items are fun!

I'm looking for items that really can't affect the game for good or ill, so I don't want items that bestow any actual benefit or penalty.

I made a pirate costume two weeks ago (complete with hook hand and peg leg) and our wizard hasn't taken it off since!

The stuff 420 listed are the kinds of things I'm looking for.  Would you be willing to share those items, good sir-or-madam?

We have a few....my favorite is the Amulet of Flight which players find and go WOW! How freaking cool! Then when they put it on they become chickens.

I will look through our cursed/funny items and these are always worth it.

Another good source for these items is in the April Issues of Dragon magazines.
