How is the single player community doing?
« on: September 26, 2013, 05:01:45 am »

I've returned after yet another hiadus and have begun to start working on my old single player project, and I'm curious how the single player community is doing?

I'm glad the vault is still up, because I planned on uploading my mod there when it's ready - but I've noticed there's only been one mod uploaded in the last few months.. Is that sign that things are really slow?

I'm not expecting thousands of downloads when I release, but it would be nice to know that there are still people out there actively seeking new SP/Small party mods.

Well, I'm still here. My machine is currently dead but I will have it fixed soon.
Don't expect thosuand of downloads, but maybe 500? EOB2 gained ~250 in less than two weeks*..

and if you put that your module is only for adults for certain romance-consumming reasons then expect those thousands.. hah.

Concur with Werelynx, but i would add EOB2 creator was well known by the community (he did EOB1) and the Eye of the Beholder franchise is an old mythical beloved commercial game series. In my case, i did in the 130 downloads in 5 months with my last mod, but as it is only v 0.75, i suppose some players would not bother downloading something that says "work in progress". In these days, a good polished module (such as Madness & Magic) could probably gain 500 or 600 dwloads in 6 months .

I wonder, how does that compares with NWN2  and Dragon Age?

I released a single player campaign for NWN2 in April this year (Crimmor, in my sig). I have around 570 downloads from the Vault, 30 or so downloads from Vault 2.0 (http://neverwintervault.org), and 270 unique downloads at the Nexus. So that's roughly 7-800 unique downloads. The most downloaded campaign for NWN2 released this year has around 1200 downloads on the Vault, while the least downloaded release this year has about 250. 5-600 seems about average for a NWN2 release this year.

I haven't looked at average numbers for recent NWN1 releases, but Gladiatrix 3 and Demonheart 1 for NWN1 both have roughly 2000 downloads, while others have 2-300 downloads, so I think the average is a bit higher (third place in # seems to be less than half those top two though).

Honestly, even 300 downloads is enough to keep me motivated. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't like a desert out there. I'm surprised online still has ~500 concurrent players at any given time, glad to know single player is still alive too.

Yeah, I released a niche single player module (level 40 only action module with unique mechanics) earlier this year and have over 300 downloads - and that's also with only half of that module being released (working on second half).  So if I can appeal to that many people with a module that has a fairly narrow audience...
