Outpost_Beta_Open Source Community Module
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:06:49 pm »

               Hi folks,

I just posted my module on the vault:

http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=6376

This is basically conceived as "open source community module" (I know, clumsy name).

By this I mean it is open to anybody to contribute to (or just wander off with). From an item or conversation, to a quest, new area or region, or rebuild thereof, or dungeon... Up to you...

If it can be put in an erf, is properly tagged (uniquely) and tested, and setting coherent, I promise to add it in and update the module regularly.

If you are interested, have a look at the "DM and Builder" guide in the documentation download.

I need help with some of the logistics of this - from how to move over journal entries, to the best way to run this on this forum. Suggestions welcome.

Very simply for the moment, please post bugs, planned additions or requested areas (by tag is easier) for you to modify here, and I'll do my best to monitor it so people are not working at cross-purposes.

It's taken me four months of a lot of work to get this out, and now RL is shouting so loud I can barely hear myself think... So I will mainly be monitoring this, and doing minor tinkering for a while.

Enjoy, I hope you like it... It's yours (or ours depending on how you look at it) '<img'>

Just to clarify - as it is now it is a (very) large sandbox module, most suited to running a DM campaign, or as a 'blank canvas' for further building. The original was too broken for that, and when I first got it not even accessible for a single player (bugged out lobby froze nwn).

All the basics are now functional, including random encounters; and there are tons of resources for a DM to bring the world to life for a group of players.

Due to the very small number of quests at the moment it is not particularly suited to single player, except for the exploration minded.

My original intent with this was to have a functional sandbox in which to run the equivalent of a PnP game. The module is very much suited to this as is now.

There is massive room for improvement and addition in building terms of course - but all the systems are either in or easily implemented from Mannast documentation which I've included in the docs RAR, as well as a guide explaining what I've done, and how to add to it easily. I am a novice builder, but I managed to completely rebuild the module from Mannast's docs, and get the systems working.

I'm not sure if it is too late in NWN's lifecycle to hope people may contribute - I've done my best to make doing so as easy as possible even for novices like myself. With the current build all that is now required (for single-player or PW style gaming - or basically DM-less gaming) is quests, and filling out lairs and dungeons with monsters and treasure (resources are there). 95% of areas have been worked on, and given weather and resources. All merchants, crafting, horses and pack animals are working. There are random treasure drops in most areas as well.

I will slowly continue to improve and update it, since I aim to start running my own pnp-like game in it next winter. Other than that people can do what they want with it. My hope is that if lots of people make even tiny contributions, as well as my continued work the end product will be a fun big sandbox module for all...

Is that realistic do you think? - I just voted on the vault and realised the majority of people seem to play single player modules only, so perhaps my interest in PnP like DMed games is outdated.

Your thoughts are welcome...

No i think there will still be interest, this sounds very cool, and it's a way for people who are new to building can contribute just a small thing and have it part of a finished product. Wish i had more time to jump into all the cool projects out there like this.

Most does not mean all... it's not a everything or nothing proposition, and really this game caters to niches.

I've been told too many times no one wants to play on PW's, yet still prefer those to SP, I don't think anyone plays NWN1 (or even NWN2) to be popular, they play it because there is nothing else around that can do what this game does. I always ask myself, if no one else wants this, do I want it myself enough to build it, if the answer to that is yes, then I consider that popular enough for me to do it -- any other answer and it's going to end up not being fun for me to do it.

You have yourself a niche, perhaps a small one, but one that I am sure will grow as DM's and part time builders notice what you've done. It probably won't happen overnight, but what you are doing is completely in the D&D spirit that originally inspired this game.

( and it sounds like it might be a good base for PW's too, a blank canvas for that other "foundation" project )

My thoughts exactly '<img'> Very well said. Without that outlook and support from a few people and the forum I would never have got this far.

Hey folks, any feedback? How are you finding the module, what do you want to use it for?

Will start up a couple of threads for additional content next week - quests and areas mainly - any help and support greatly appreciated '<img'>

Thanks fredseeker. This project has been languishing a bit due to other priorities and limited response, but I intend to go back in soon and add quest and dungeons. Will keep you posted '<img'>
