Some good free roam module?
« on: September 06, 2012, 09:43:52 pm »

Well, I have searched for some free roam type of module for quite some time now and didn't find much. What I'm looking for is:
-many different locations of as many different themes as possible (plains, forests, mountains, etc)
-no story (or story being optional)
-many different monsters for all levels
-at least one city/town with shops and stuff

Well, I am aware that the features mentioned above are all the features of persistent worlds, but it's not exactly what I want. I'd like a module that can be enjoyed in single player while still featuring what I mentioned.

 http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=6050
PLATEMAIL is pretty much like this - but it's the only one I found and I wondered if there are any others. If they were just a little more suited for singleplayer than PLATEMAIL, I'd be happy, too.

I know I put a lot of "requirements" but I thought it would be worth a try. Maybe someone here knows a suitable module for me?

Thanks a lot. '<img'>

It's intended for a party with levels 18+ (I'd say at least early twenties if soloing, and there are henchmen available), but you might want to look at Hunt for a Necromancer. It would seem to fit the bill in terms of different environments with different opponents and so on.

The story is straightforward enough that you can pick it up easily and basically put it on the back burner until you realize, "I must be getting near the main boss." Ditto for quests you pick up along the way. But, there is quite a bit of combat.

There are shops in the central town area and several more elsewhere as you explore.

It seems to scale pretty well with level and it may well take a PC starting in his early-to-mid twenties up to quite near level 40.

One issue is that the spawned encounters reset after a certain amount of time, so you will fight the same encounters several times if you cross the maps alot.

Resetting encounters is actually a nice thing for me!
So yeah, I will give this module a try, thanks. '<img'>

If someone knows any others, I'll be grateful!

I am also looking for similar modules, theres lots of pw modules around but i have no idea which ones are suited for some single-player large-world free-roam play.

While I have not actually played them (just noted them as an interesting concept), the descriptions of the various Endless Nights modules by Havlen suggest they might be the kind of thing you are looking for. There were a number of different versions released.  Endless Nights VI  is the latest, but in the opinion of some players Endless Nights IV is the best (I am not in a position to judge myself).

H4 - The Throne of Bloodstone is a module that might at least approximate your requirements. It can be played by characters in a wide range of levels, and includes a suitable town to serve as a base for one's excursions. Though the opening phase is somewhat story-driven, once beyond that you can spend the bulk of the module just exploring various layers of the Abyss, which offer a wide range of environments, in a free-roaming style.

Endless Nights mods are good for this sort of thing.  There are lots of small straight forward quests, lots of areas to investigate and respawning, scaling encounters. There is a story of sorts but it's minimal and I think it's best to approach the EN modules as a survival contest rather than as a story telling rpg.  I've spent a lot time with EN4 and never beaten it, I play dead is dead.  Have played a little of 1 and 3.  They've all been good quality.

Otherwise I've not played them at all yet, they're on my to do list, but Tortured Hearts 1 and 2 might be what you're after.

Good luck.

You can try my server Dawn of Nordock, its listed under Roleplay. There is no supporting staff. Meaning there is no DM's or anything else. LoL dont ask me why I put it under Roleplay.. I think it was more out of habit then actual any real want to roleplay.

I used to host the server years ago and just put it back up for my kid to log on and play from time to time. Its a huge mod with tons of different areas to go through. You can also download it here nwvault.ign.com/View.php. It is set up for party but you can solo it too. There are also a ton of built in quests for different classes you just have to find them in game.

I will be doing updates on it from time to time like adding my crafting system or fixing bugs.

Tortured Hearts 1 and 2 seem just about perfect. They do have plots, but you can ignore them, at least to an extent.
