I used Camstudio (camstudio.org/) for the bit of it I did, though I suppose it depends what resolution and framerate you need it to record in, and how long.

As an example, this is medium res, 800x600 at 15 frames a second, and doesn't lag (much), but it is hard to read the text.  Still, it's pretty good for a free program.

Edit:  Now I remember why I did it in 800x600 and not full screen.  It doesn't seem to like NWN in fullscreen, just records as black for me, though it works fine setting as an area around a windowed mode.  Likely someone else will have a better suggestion if you need to record full screen.

You could give the xfire ingame video option a try, made a few videos ..its not that bad, but not the optimum i think.

I have made all of my videos using FRAPS (example), but there is a noticeable performance hit, especially when the game is working hard already with vfx (probably doesn't help that the computer I'm recording on is circa 2004). I would second the XFire recommendation; the capture codec that it uses was pretty low impact to my recollection and could be configured to give decent quality.

FRAPs makes large files. The free version limits length to 30 seconds but you can piggy back and append videos to one another for longer videos.

However I use Microsoft Moviemaker to compress the files and add titles, etc.

I use photobucket for storage.

Fraps records raw video, you'll need to encode it to some format or it will be insanely large. You can do it with Windows Movie Maker, or find another program to do it. With WMM it is also fairly easy to patch those 30s videos together.

If you want longer then 30s you need to buy fraps or ___. Alternatively you can use Xsplit, its a streaming program but can also be used to locally record videos. Downside is, it can only record windows. (windowed mode)

I use fraps to record full screen applications, xsplit for everything else, as for the lag, recording is a very taxing thing to do on any computer, and the first thing you should do is halve your resolution. Unless you have a really high end computer you can forget recording those 1080p 60fps videos. I have a pretty damn good iron and im going with 720p at 25fps.

And now I notice the topic is one month old and the last post was a week ago!
