Router help for hosting game?
« on: July 18, 2015, 06:11:49 am »

               Hello,

I have been trying to get my server up for a while but to no avail. It is probably a minor setting but am hoping there is a whizkid/adiltly person in here willing to help walk this through step by step.

(Personally thinking i need to open up a port for it)

Sorry if this topic is not supposed to be here but was not entiewly sure where i shouldve places it.

Anyways thanks in advance!

Hey,

You need to port forward NWN in your router. But you also need to set up your router so it reserves the local IP address for the server computer.

First you should check what local IP the the server computer has in the router's "connected devices" page.

Then, go to the LAN page and look for an option to "reserve IP address" for the server computer. It should be something like 192.168.x.xxx

Once you have identified the IP, you should look for a port forwarding option.

Enter the name of the service, e.g. NWN, and enter the local IP that you have reserved, and lastly enter the port you use. Default port is 5121.

I hope that helps a bit. '<img'> Good luck.

A helpful link: Hosting Games on the Internet (from neverwinternights.info). It's not 100% complete information, because each router/firewall will have it's own particular method for port range forwarding...which is where Google comes in handy.
