I need LAN help, please!
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:50:30 am »

My brother and I have been trying to get Neverwinter Nights 1 working on our LAN for a while now. I have the old Platinum  Edition and he got the Complete Collection. We tried to play over LAN but the game only works for the host. Basically what happens is whoever is doing the "connecting"; once the game loads up their character just stands there. When clicking to move somewhere, they walk in place. Stranger yet is that no matter what character is loaded, it always says "Level 1 Chaotic Good Fighter" regardless of level, class and alignment. The host experiences no such problems, the game runs fine. First time we thought it was because he was host. So we swapped, and I became the host. Then his character did it.

I know all about the lack of compatability with Win7, and wouldn't be surprised if that is the true issue behind this. It doesn't matter how we configure the ip of the host to the router, what we do with the router, what we do with config files, etc. The game shows up, we can see it, we can connect to it. I have read problems people were having where the server doesn't appear and stuff like that no such issue here. In all reality there is nothing I can think of that should be making this not work. I'm at a loss. I have no idea what is left to do.

Here is how it lies:

-Both PCs are running Windows 7 64-bit. The router is a Linksys E3200.

-All the ports and ranges required for the game are open on the router; Firewall settings have been made to allow the game to run over the network without blocking.

-As mentioned, neither game is a hack, a cd crack or anything of the sort (both completely legitimate copies) - This one I can not stress enough because a hundred google searches of this problem lead me to people whining about playing over LAN on one CD key.

-nwplayer.ini has been manipulated on both PCs (including the client port #, which are not the same on each PC)

-Both games are updated to 1.69 (goes without saying)

As a workaround, I tried setting up a dedicated server, but neither host nor connecting  persons are allowed to log in to the game. nwserver keeps saying "Idle, login not allowed" or something. I have no clue if that is related or not but wouldn't be surprised.

Hopefully someone has encountered this so I can get an answer, the internet has been straight up unhelpful, much to my chagrin. I am incredibly open to ideas at this point.

Check nwserverError*.txt  It should be in one of the log folders on your NWN install folder.

Also if you have the games installed into one of the programs folders,  Try copying the game directly to the root c drive and running the game and server from there.

I did that, I suppose the Mods can close/delete this one then.
