Something for a newbie?

               I was interested in NwN1 ages ago, but wasn't sure how someone without much knowledge of D&D would be received (the people I knew that had played it made it sound super complicated). Bit silly when I think about it now, but with a lovely fully 7-compatible version of the game out there, I figured I'd give the game a try this time around.

So, newbies and persistent worlds. Anyone with some experience with these want to tell me where I might be welcomed? Sure, I'll give single player stuff a go before trying to get into one, I just don't want anyone to get too frustrated with me if maybe there's a term I'm unfamiliar with or something of that matter.

               It really depends a lot on your interests - e.g. are you mainly in to something very action-oriented or more roleplay-oriented. Many of the roleplay servers requires that you act "in-character" most of the time, but it is fairly easy to get used to (at least not technical). If you are interested in trying this, I'll permit myself to recommend my own server at http://www.nwnravenloft.com - we have an event starting on friday that's in part tailored for new players. Of course, there are many other roleplay-oriented PWs around, and it's likely a good idea to try a few out to find the one you feel suits your preferences most.

On the other hand, if you more interested in just fighting things and hauling treasure without having to worry about actually roleplaying it, try to look in the PW Action section when you are in the multiplayer part of the game. As new, it's usually a good place to start a place where there's a good amount of other players, as these are usually quite helpful in showing how things work.

It might be worth considering that roleplay-oriented servers in a sense can be an advantage if you feel less comfortable with the technical/gameplay balance aspect of the game, since they are often less combat focused and even then, they usually encourage group play.

               First off, wherever you might visit, don't be shy. Let folks know that you are new to playing NWN online in a PW environment. Most players will gladly help you out. My own PW has had several "first timers" over the past year or so and they've become addicts. '> Admittedly, some PWs seem impatient with folk not knowing every little piece of lore or their rule sets and can leave a bad impression in general for those new to both NWN and D&D. Move on and find one more willing to be helpful.

Since many PWs have changes to spells, domains, feats, etc..., making your first PC (player character) a Fighter, Rogue or Barbarian is often the easiest to get your feet wet with.

               Obligatory linkage: The World of Aenea (www.amethyst-dragon.com/nwn).  Lots of changes from the base game, very friendly players that are more than willing to help out a player new to NWN, D&D, or both.

As stated earlier, just take a look around.  Try out multiple servers to see if you find a place you like.

               I'd just like to point out that the people who posted above include some of the most successful PW's in the history of NWN. I recommend that you try them first. I was addicted to Ravenloft Prisoners of the Mist forever... I can personally vouch for that one being an excellent server. I've heard a lot of good about the others above as well.
Like they said, the main thing is to try a few different ones before you decide which one to stick with. They are all very different and very customized. Play each for a few days at least so that you get a better sense of the world and the players. Try not to get discouraged if you run in to a mean player when you first start... There's a good chance that he's the exception and the other players are cool.
Also keep in mind the difference between IC (In Character) and OOC (Out of Character).
In most Roleplay PW's, you're expected to remain IC as often as you can. That means that if someone is being a jerk, it may just be that their character is a jerk. Often, if you send them a private message, they'll be very friendly OOC. They don't have to be always 'In Character' in private tells, so use them any time you have an OOC question.

I'd recommend my server, but it's still being built...
Sounds like you already have plenty of good choices here though.

               Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I definitely plan to try out multiple PWs to see what fits my playing style, but it's always nice if I have an idea of what to expect and it looks like I've been given some good options and websites to check out here.

               ArgentumRegio 'City of Dohral' welcomes new and veteran players alike. We have an excellent set of tutorial areas so you can learn all the tricks of advanced play while in a safe location where even dying has no penalty. This server is a very 'traditional Dungeons & Dragons ' server, it allows for many types of action not native to nwn - but it is all done in a very recognizable and easy to grasp way - when you have 20 minutes to spare, try the tutorial - I'm sure it will help you in your selection process as well as help you get up to speed fast. This is a ROLE PLAY - enhanced server meaning we won't boot you for not RPing, rather we'll help you RP as much as you like and you get XP for RP too.

               And depending on your connectivity and willingness to DL large haks, the CEP or PRC packs, etc. to play on some of the more expansive and advanced PWs, there are some like Three Towns that requires just the basic game installed and has lots of helpful and cooperative players of various levels.... an oldie but goodie to get your feet wet.

BTW, I just noticed that the server details are no longer available through Gamespy and suspect this has something to do with the Master Server issue.  If so, that really sux for new players trying to understand at a glimpse what is needed on each.  Even the websites don't appear.                Whatever you do just remember there is an entire smorgasbord of worlds out there, alluded to above.
It's really the allure of the game in that the worlds are made by players, and yet the players make the worlds. It's as if there are all these pieces of a puzzle which can be put together in different ways to make many masterpieces, each from a different period.  Some are romantic, some impressionist, others baroque. Each have their own emphasis.
