Question Relating to Server Hosting

               I’m attempting to set up a multiplayer game with a friend.
We just want to go through the official campaign together, so I set up my
router to accept the 5121 port and the UDP and used the NWN server app to
launch the game.

 Now, whenever he tries to direct connect it times out on
him. I gave him the router IP (the MAC address to my router,) but for some
reason he can’t seem to connect or find the server. Also, I can’t seem to be
able to post the game online to the list provided by Gamespy.



 What am I doing wrong here?

               Getting servers to accept connections can sometimes be tricky.

I would open more ports around 5121. Maybe 5120-5124 just to be sure.

If even that doesn't work try to have your router squatting directly on the IP. Don't remember the technical term for this now...

After you set up everything visit a homepage like www.whatismyip.com or something similar to understand how the world sees you.

If nothing works then one could suspect either your system or your ISP is "firewalling" the server somehow.

               The router's IP and it's MAC address are not the same thing. The MAC address is a unique(ish) hardware identifier that enables whichever device is handing an IP to your router to ensure it will get a unique IP, but the number it gives is different.
If you browse to the site Superfly mentioned from a computer on your network, it will give you the correct IP address to give your friend.

Also, have you given the hosting computer a static IP? And are you forwarding the nwserver.exe traffic to it?

               A couple things I can think of... you may have to set up port forwarding....

I have seen this talked alot about for some people.

Also there is a setting in you nwnplayer.ini for posting the game to gamespy that you may have to change. Check:

               Thanks for the responses. I managed to get it to work using the guide provided at the portforwarding.com website. I just needed to set up a static IP.

               I still have these issues myself though.
My IP is obtained from TWC- Albany and I have a router.
I have given myself a static IP, forwarded the port and have accepted traffic from the nwnserver.exe.
I have applied the right settings to post the game to GameSpy in the nwnplayer.ini and have also authorized the application and server though my windows xp firewall (which is on).
I am also running NWNx2.
Players can ALWAYS direct connect but the game is RARELY seen on the GameSpy network. How can I get this to function right?

I have noticed this is the case for my server sometimes too (which is not hosted locally.) Does anyone know what causes this, and how to fix it?
