A full and populated PW?
« on: April 06, 2011, 10:45:06 pm »

What is the most populated, MMO like PW for me to try. I am new to the game, so what would be a good initial PW to start with?

Maybe The Higher Grounds Action PW? Its not full, mean there is a lot of players and big community but they got multiple servers where players are split. But you can list all players at other servers and send shout across all servers

and its said its very close to WoW

What he said if you are looking for numbers. It is indeed a fun world.

Is that your entire requirement as in players or are you looking for set times or straight role playing? There are several other flavors to choose from as well besides just numbers but I would say as numbers go that would be your best bet.

I would definitely categorize Higher Ground as MMO-like; there's always someone on (except later tonight when we're going to have to bring the servers down for an update) and the community is very helpful and welcoming to new players. Like many MMOs, the learning curve is steep if you want to master the game in its most difficult areas, but at the same time there is no rush or impetus to force you to spend more time studying the game than actually playing it.

You can check out the links in my signature for more information, or just head to the Getting Started page to set yourself up to log in (you'll likely need to check out the Installation Guide to get CEP v2.3 unless you have it already).

But to echo off of TSMDude's comments, what sort of MMO-like experience were you looking for? I will make no illusion about it, Higher Ground is heavy on the side of hack-and-slash despite the potential for roleplaying.

If you're looking for something MMO-like, I suggest staying away from Roleplay servers.  I know I just offended a million people with that post, but RP servers (Which are great, and the only ones I ever play on, so chillax!) are probably the type of NWN server least like an MMO.  Many of them strongly discourage activities (Min/maxing, grinding, efficient and powerful character builds/mechanics for the sake of being the best, not for the sake of anything roleplay-related) that are strongly encouraged in MMOs.

Higher Ground certainly fits the bill, as the others have said.  It's action, it's roleplay-optional if you care about that sort of thing, and it's always got tons of people on.

You could also try the Isle of Styss, they always have 40+ people online.I understand they 're a social server though, so be forewarned that much of that server's playerbase is engaging in, um, adult activities.

I actually laughed a little when you said you probably offended a million people with the comment about RP servers not being like MMOs. I actually agree completely based with all the points you said and consider it more of a compliment than insult. The reason I'm still on NWN is because even current generation MMOs can't capture the same RP quality and essence from what I've seen. The focus is always on speed through dungeons or being the absolutely most powerful (usually not always).

Back on topic, another nod though toward Higher Grounds. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

               Hello Aiomon,
I've been playing on PW's for a long time so I would like to give you some tips.

Although I agree it can be fun on servers that seem more lively do not be mislead to think that the most populated server is always the best. Bear in mind that you just need another player or two to team up with to have an enjoyable time. In that case I could suggest the PW Evernight, see this thread:
http://social.biowar...9/index/6099182

Now on about servers in general and RP specifically. I remember a time when playing on RP servers was fun. You had both the "talkers" that liked sit in town and discuss politics, weather and so on....but still you had players just running around or grouping to head out hunting....and it was all ok.

Although RP servers are the most popular actually some of them are hard to get into I think. Although they could seem welcoming at first...if you're not into spinning long made up stories or pretending to be doing it you will never really get into them unfortunately. I have this problem on most RP servers.

In any case I still think there could be many fun servers for you to find and Higher Ground is probably one of them. Evernight yet another one. I'll post more tips when I remember them...because I am sure there are more...

Personally, I look for places where the DM:Player ratio isn't going to be 1:40... so you can actually get some attention.

Of course, a lot will depend on a synergy of what you as a player are looking for and what the DM or Builder "team" want to provide to potential players.

The biggest player count in the world is no good if everyone is off sitting around a campfire talking if all you want to do is go out and find some monsters to kill with a few other players (for example).

-Most- RP servers aren't like MMOs. I've been told that Amia is similar to that style of play, but only secondhand... haven't been there in years. That's the only one under RP that comes to mind.

I would personally avoid one that is like an MMO. I play a little GuildWars when I want that kind of thing.

Yeah, in principle it might seem that the more people on-line the more fun you'll have, but in practice it's usually the exact opposite, in my experience at least.

Would be interesting to hear back from the OP after these few weeks have passed... to see how his experiences fared against what he was expecting.

To be honest, I really havnt had all that much time to game. I tried out a few PW, not really remembering their names. I did try higher grounds, and was more impressed than I was for the others, but I have not had enough time to tell if I really enjoyed all that much. I will report back soon, as I will have a good bit of time to play soon!
