PS one last thing...do the players really have an effect on the world? Because so far, skimming around, the only "effects" i see are that they kill big monsters. Again and again and again. This doesn't seem too much like an ever-evolving, always forward-moving world :/
When I think "Persistent World"...I think of politics...factions...allies and enemies...stuff that will happen that will shape the way we play the game and tell the story for agessssssssssss.
It is funny...that despite claiming you're a "n00b" you are actually asking one of the most advanced questions.
About the world changing...well yes...of course...that is a reason to play the game right there. A DM can in-game change pretty much. He can remove NPC's, add, control monsters, burn villages, flood cities and much much more...you probably won't get this in an MMO. All of theese are however things that will "reset" when the server does...so at some point, the game can continue as usual.
Also over the long run even larger changes can be made...only builders need to be careful not to break the most vital and most important parts of the world of course. It is more easy to just remove a city and the surrounding areas than to make a starting city with all that. We are talking many many hours. Remember this is a "free" game. I mean the people working on the server are not paid work force. It is people like you and me doing this in their free time.
So...it depends what server you are playing at really.
Personally I don't really need a massive rebuilding of the world at all times. If you look around you in real life you will notice that the world isn't really changing at an alarming pace...
About doing things again and again. I think one fundamental part of an RPG is the player characters ability to "level up" or gain abilities over time. This is a common question on many MMO forums. Players are so afraid of that they will be "grinding". What I want to say is that for you to be able to reach the highest levels and get the best gear there HAS to be some kind of repetition.
Yes...I agree that there needs to be variation on what you are doing...but if you look at it...you are really killing monsters. However...they can be big, small, dumb, intelligent, magical, non-magical, single, multiple, hiding in a cave, chasing you around in the city and much more.
I don't however understand people who ask this element to be removed totally. Usually this is people who also want to remove the time aspect all together....basically giving you max level and all the best gear on logging in to the server. How fun is that? Leveling up/gaining abilites is one of the biggest drives in the game and it cannot be removed (if it isn't an Arena server of course...which is a completely different thing).
Personally I dont think this "leveling up" should be made too easy or too hard. That is called the "balance" of the game...and as I mentioned it is one the biggest drives in the game...so it would be wise to keep it for a reasanoble time. Also gear is another drive.
Yes...let us not forget stories and roleplaying now. They can definately also be a drive. For me personally though your PC's advancement is still the mayor part. Sure...there are servers where you are just sitting around a campfire in town and just discussing who will be the next mayor. Then perhaps you have an ellection and so on.
Personally I think that goes on the virge of social playing (and not roleplaying) so I tend to shy it. Also sometimes very "hard core" roleplaying server that really make a statement about controlling everything and "pretending" to have eliminated "powergaming" actually have just supressed it or "hidden" it.
As usual...being in the middle is good I think. What the middle is varies from player to player. The servers I have listed on the X-Fire page range from middle to hard-core roleplaying....
Sorry for the long rant like explanation....but you asked :-P
