Questions on the Shifter class and exploits
« on: October 13, 2011, 01:10:25 am »

               Hi all,
I find myself timkering with NWN1 again and though I still have the server I use to host in my archives, I am looking to update myself on the status of a few of the systems I remember had issues.  I will be making various posts on several topics but this thread is about the shifter class.  I am looking to see if I can script some checks so as to control any of what I might call exploits.  Anyone out there who could list some of the quirks on the class?

Questions on the Shifter class and exploits

yes though i already fixed some of them in my patch project
- dying/unpolymorph with low hps while you have constitution bonus on skin (carried over normal equipment) causes server crash on most PWs
- if you click on spell that allows targetting before you polymorph, after polymorph you can cast this spell and you even wont lose spell use, this might be usefull with unlimited shapes with boost spells
- if you polymorph you lost all spells granted by bonus spell slots and after you cancel polymorph you have to set them up again
- the same with spells granted by bonus ability on items, though if you cast a boost spell on the ability in question you wont lose them all (in case of druid with owls insight of +12 wisdom, he wont lose any except from previous issue)
- you can use tenser transformation to get a cleave which allows you to fulfill Blackguard prestige class
- leveling while polymorphed might make your character invalid (more skillpoints etc.)
- caster level of spells used by shifters class uses class level of class you took at lvl 1 - this allows hybrids like 25monk/shifter but mainly it will screw up character if you take monk at first in build like 2monk 28druid 10 shifter (caster lvl 2 ice storm from rakshasa lol)

not bugs but things to consider:
- all polymorphs except kobold and maybe golems/dragon suffers with horrible attack bonus, if a module settings have high AC then shifters will be very weak
- a kobold with monk level reaches ultra high AC on low lvls around 15-20
- since monk AC and monk UBAB for many shapes there is a little point to make a shifter without monk

This is not just limited to polymorphs.  Any item granting a bonus feat can be used to meet prerequisite requirements.  So long as these feats are on the character each time they load, ELC will consider them legal.  1.69 XP3 horse system module scripts do have a feature for unshifting before ELC.  I have no idea how feasible handling items is, but you may have to do a copy and delete rather than an unequip.

I love this one.  Permahaste travels at 3.5 * base movement speed.  Truly a one of a kind build.  However the only spell that really makes a significant difference is ice storm as noted.  All the others that actually use caster level instead of shifter level effectively cap the level at ten or less.

There is also the feature of being able to use quick slotted spell book spells that match the spell ID of the shifted form's spells without using up quickslots.  This allows druids to cast maximized icestorm with a spell level of 5 an unlimited number of times in Rakshasa shape.

Depending on how your server saves characters, it can cause players to de-shift at regular intervals... which is horrible when you're in the middle of a fight.

Those issues can be, and have been largely worked out.  I have redone base stats for shapes in polymorph.2da, and made modifications to Iznoghoud's shifter scripts (among other things) to keep shifters competitive and interesting on our server.  It's taken a bit of work and time however.

Yea I forget about this, but normally you re-shift. Which can remove from you some spell boosts but also grants you in some cases all temp HPs above maximum again.

Which is another expl0it, player can manualy save his character while in polymorph in order to gain these bonus hitpoints and in case of temporary polymorphs like tenser it also extend their duration (very probably the duration counter starts again from 0)

I always wondered how some players were able to maintain their polymorphs indefinitely and always seemed to recover endess hit points.  So, if you save your PC the polymorph timer and temp hit points reset is what your saying?
