if anyone knows the answer to this Simple query. Back-story first.


 


I have decided to see if I can make some 3D models. However, I wanted a modelling program that was simpler than 3dsmax/gmax as I figured that (at least for my baby steps period) it would be easier to learn the (hopefully transferable) basics with such a program. So I bought and registered milkshape.


 


Now milkshape has an interesting property. It has one of the largest (if not The largest) collection of plug-ins for importing and exporting different 3d file formats. Not only that but the owners of milkshape encourage 3rd party developers to create these plug-ins to such an extent that they have released an sdk just for this purpose. The language used c++.


 


So what I was wondering was if anyone has ever released an export and/or import plug for milkshape that deals with ascii NwN mdl format? If so, can sombody point me to where I can download it/them. Otherwise I have 2 choices.


  1. Write one myself even though my c++ skills are rustier than the textures I released last month.

  2.    
  3. Export my models in a format I can import into gmax.

I never used Milkshape as anything other than a convenient stepping stone for changing models from "weird" formats used by other games to OBJ or such for use in gmax. I never found - amongst the copious lists - a path for MDL.


 


What Milkshape can do as an actual modelling application I've no idea as I never tried using it for that, though I do recall finding its interface even just for examining models to be a pain in the arse. (I haven't used it since I finished the conversion of the AvP2 models since I want to work on completely new geometry now and don't have the urge to convert stuff any more and Gmax and Blender have bigger and better bricks).


If Milkshape does have actual creation capacity, I imagine it ought to have some facility for saving meshes in some ascii format which you could just throw into gmax and re-export in an Aurora friendly way. Probably the simplest in the long run, unless you're intending to do A LOT of work in Milkshape... (In terms of converting models from other sources, I would strongly recommend passing them through NWmax, to ensure what you've got is definitely a workable Aurora mesh and not just some Spleen thing that looks like one).
