Why does the head look darker when I autosmoothed it(actually I selected #1 of Smoothing Groups if anyone's familiar with 3ds max)?

You need to do tone and lighting on the texture. also 3dax is apparently a terribly spesfic CGI program not really ideal for game installations.

Check the ambient and diffuse colors in both places highlighted in the pic below.

What??? That makes no sense. 3DS Max has long been the industry standard for making models for games and is the platform that the models in NWN were built with.

The problem isn't the texture and the ambient and diffuse colors are working fine. it's just the little black shadow lines as shown in the second image.
