Cutscene Contest?
« on: December 23, 2014, 07:25:39 pm »

I was just wondering if anyone here has thought about doing a custom content contest with a difference?

At the moment - the contests are usually static assets.
Eg: Placeables, Armor, Models, Textures, maybe even music / sounds

How about making a contest where the authors or fans of the authors can create content (cutscene / video scens) using those assets (or base assets)

I am just thinking of it in terms that a really well directed scene can be as good as any piece of art.
Cutscenes are one of the areas of nwn / nwscripting that doesnt get much exposure on these forums.

An example challenge I was thinking of doing was this:

Pick a scene from a game or movie, and try to replicate it as closely as possible in a cutscene.
For example: The Sending from FFX
and my own adaptation I used in my PW (for part of a story-line)

I have thoughts of another scene I plan to try and replicate myself.
I am thinking of trying to do Frozen - Let it Go scene.
Obviously gonna be hard with the Palace construction etc.
But I like a challenge.

Entries would probably need:
1. The NSS file that did the cutscene
2. Any assets required to run the scene (haks etc)

The only bit that might be difficult would be around music licensing - but I think legally speaking - you are allowed to distribute music if the clips are of a very low bitrate (that they become the equivelant of demo / preview quality etc)

Of course we could get around the requirement of BMU files, if a static movie / wmv / mp4 could be created with the video content.
The NSS would then match the content in the video.

Has anyone tried anything like this yet?

Even better from a copyright perspective is to make a pastiche (basically take the P.) of a movie scene/pop video/etc. Anyone who has played any of the Lego Batman/star wars/etc. games will know what I mean. Or think Weird Al Yankovic pop videos (e.g. "Eat It" took the michael out of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and "Like A Surgeon" did the same for Madonna's "Like A Virgin").

Do you mean Machinima?

Anyway, I would suggest you post messages in both the scripting and toolset sections, pointing to this one to see what sort of support there is for this idea.
