In need of a helmet model (hood)
« on: November 15, 2014, 12:27:47 pm »

I believe there is a hood helmet in CEP, but it's a simple one in which the face is obscured by... well, nothing, yet it's still black and unseen. Of course this is due the fact that a helmet replaces the head, but it still doesn't look right to me.

Has anyone created a more believable hood that obscures the face?

I'm personally thinking of something like this:

In this case only the eyes would be "censored" with black, not the whole face. And at least it makes sense for folk not to know what the face hidden beneath looks like.

I know nothing about modelling, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks. '<img'>

Project Q has head models like this for all races. This could be altered to make two helms, one for males and one for females, since I'm sure you wouldn't want man-eye syndrome on your ladies.

Unfortunately, I believe that the helm method isn't suitable for hoods, masks, and the like.  Myself and Andarian investigated it a few years ago, and it turns out that helms don't accept the skin, hair, and tattoo channels of PLTs.  They only work with cloth, leather and metal.  I don't know why this is, but it means that, even if your texture has a proper skin channel for the face, a helm won't inherit your character's skin colour.  '<img'>  It's heads or nothing, alas.

I have not investigated the helm functions very much, however:

Is it not possible to allow the helm model to have deleted geometry about the face area?

Then the helm could receive what ever material(s) are used and the appropriate head geometry/ material would simply show through the deleted geometry of the helm.

Where is the helm geometry is parented? The head node? or the head or where?

Unfortunately no.  Helm geometry does not cover head geometry, it replaces head geometry.

Open face helms are possible, but require model work (to add a specific node, to open the helm up, and to add internal faces so it looks better), require the players be using NWNCX, and have some limitations.
