You all have probably seen this guy before but...  For me, it would take some serious bladder control to put my hand that close.

I think spiders are pretty graceful most of the time but this goliath is just scary. I wonder if we humans once had a terrible encounter with them on mass... whenever i see them i get a feeling i cannot explain. Even they are so small in size here and harmfull like a fly there is something in my genetics that ... i dont know '<img'>

What I find intriguing is the fact that there are over 40,000 species and so far we only know 1 which is a herbibore.

If I remember correctly, there is a fossil of a prehistoric spider leg that measures nearly four feet in length. Multiply that by two and you have a pair of legs that span eight feet. Combine that with a body that is probably half as wide as the leg length and you a thorax approximately two feet in diameter.

I believe that the huge spider referenced in the BBC series "Walking with Monsters" has since been reclassified as a sea creature that was a spider relative. There are still other "bugs" in the fossil record that are extreme counterparts to today's varieties however.

Bugs were much bigger about 350 million years ago because there was much more oxygen in the air (35% of the atmosphere, vs. today's 20%), so their bodies could grow bigger without having to expand their respiratory system, which is basically a bunch of tubes.
