Move Inventory Around In NwN 1?
« on: August 18, 2014, 06:41:34 am »

Excuse me? Does anyone know if there is any kind of an option, or something  that can be changed via a custom hak with NwN 1 that will let you move the inventory around on the screen?

I have been having trouble trying open up the game lately, giving me an error screen on startup and landing me back at my desktop screen again. :-/ But with Windows XP Pro and a "AMD Radeon HD 7700" video card, through a lot of playing around over the past few days with my pc and nwn 1 resolution settings, I feel I have finally found the right one which will get me into the game with not too much of a problem... (I am now set at "1280 x 800", but with 16 bit colour setting instead of 32, as 32 won't work for me) at least for now anyway.

I know that in the past, nwn 1 used to be set with 800 x 600 resolution which makes the nwn 1 game window and everything else bigger within, but with my current resolution setting now, it's all gone a bit smaller, and so the Inventory Window sits there in the top left hand corner of my screen looking smaller than usual, and I'm having to peer a bit closer to my screen to see what's there.

I have also played nwn 2 in recent months, and being a better game with nicer graphics and graphics card updates e.t.c I have noticed you can move your Inventory around there. (again, I think this is nicer and more handy) But this doesnt appear to be the case with nwn 1.

Does anyone out there know if there is any possible way to do this with nwn 1 please?

If not through the current settings, then is there any clever person out there who would know how to make a hak which will allow me to do this please?

I don't know of a fix for this, but you shouldn't have any problem reading the screen at 1280 x 800 once you get used to it.

Thought not, though it would be a nice feature. I suspect that this would involve an addition rather than an 'unlocking' or modification, which is a chance on a whole different level.

I've never played at 1280 x 800, but I do play at 1920 x 1080. At that resolution (and maybe at 1280 x 800), you can have 3 windows open at a time. So, as an awkward workaround, you could open 2 other windows first (examples: character sheet, journal, or a henchman's inventory) and your inventory last, so it would be in the middle. It wouldn't make the text any larger, though.

If you are using an LCD monitor (flat panel), the text would be smaller but really sharp at your monitor's native resolution.

Thank you for the helpful replies. '<img'>

I am glad there is at least one person who agrees with me on this, as it "did" make everything in the game a bit smaller to look at, considering how updated hardware becomes get over the years.

Hey there,

With my current graphics card, (AMD Radeon HD 7700) and a whole lot of playing around with the resolution to see which works best, I have finally found that

1280 x 800 on 16 bit colour is the only setup which makes my nwn 1 game work with this current pc system I have.

I don't know why it's like that, but it is what it is I guess, and I'm quite happy with that.

I don't fully understand your explanation of having 3 game windows open at once, but actually, I have noticed something quite pleasant with my game.

1280 x 800 resolution is usually quite small for nwn 1, but for some reason, pleasantly, I have suddenly found that my game now sits with a bigger view of everything, including the Inventory Window, and suddenly I don't feel as if some kind of addiition to be able to move the Inventory Window around is nearly as important anmymore.

This may be quite odd, I'm not sure. But just a couple of days ago, I switched my pc to the biggest resolution of 800 x 600 (which I think is the original resoltion setup when nwn 1 first came about) to see if it would work with nwn 1, which it didn't.

So when I set my pc back to 1280 x 800 again, I found that nwn 1 was a bigger view of everything as I briefly explained.

It does seem quite odd I think, but it's the only explanation I can think of, as I can't think of aything else I have done to make this happen to my game. So I guess I'm rather happy with my game right now, with no addition to anything.

I would like to know one thing though, if you don't mind me asking.

How do you get a resolution of "1920 x 1080?"

My pc will only go up to 1600 x 1200 resolution?

Do you happen to have Windows 7 by any chance? Is that why?

I have been wonering if nwn 1 will work with Windows 7, and if it does, then I might consider buying it at some point.

I don't have one of those yet. (considering I assume they are the newest ones available these days)

Mine is a Flat Square CRT, which is probaly as old as yesterdays news now as far as technology goes.

I'm hoping to buy a new wide screen at some point though, but I keep this one for now since I apper to be quite lucky that it hasn't broken down since the first day I bought it. '<img'>

Resolution is dependent upon a combination of video card and monitor.  Your video card (AMD Radeon HD 7700) looks as if it has a maximum resolution of 4096x2160, however, your monitor apparently can only display a maximum resolution of 1600x1200.  Upgrading your monitor will possibly give you more resolution options.  I just upgraded from a 17" flat panel, maximum resolution 1280x1024, to a 23" widescreen, maximum resolution 1920x1080.

As to whether or not NWN will work on Win7.  Short answer, yes it will.  Longer explanation, whether or not that retail version you purchased oh so many years ago will work without issue, is hard to say.  If you upgrade to Win7 or Win8 you may be better off to purchase a copy of NWN from GOG.com.  They are currently selling the Diamond edition for $9.99 and occassionally run sales or offer package deals.

[EDIT] I should add that the GOG Diamond version states that it will work with XP, Vista, 7 and 8.  And it is patched to v1.69 [/EDIT]

FWIW I run NwN on both XP and Win7. Graphics card is a hd3870 x2 and the monitor is 1680 x 1050 (16:10 aspect ratio). I have a an integrated soundmax audio card. The only problem I've had was that NwN under Win7 wouldn't recognise the sound card. I fixed it by copying and pasting the necessary lines from nwn.ini on the XP version. There is one other thing to note is that if I use the launcher Win7 isn't very happy (changes colour windows basic, doesn't allow you to skip stuff to the main menu in game). So I now have direct shortcuts to the game and the toolset.

My almost-a-decade-old copy of NWN ran fine at 1920x1080 in Win XP, and still runs fine now in Win 8.

Judging by your puzzled reaction, I conclude that a third window is not an option at 1280x800. It wasn't an option when I played on my old CRT monitor at 1152x864. As your resolution goes up, at some point it is wide enough for a third window to fit. I don't know the minimum resolution at which the third window becomes possible.

As long as NWN is patched to 1.69 it will work with Win 7 and Win 8/8.1.  However, it will require some setting adjustments (i.e. compatibility mode) to run correctly. I have the game running on 5 different machines and, even though three of the machines are identical, each installation has slight variations in its settings to make the game run smoothly. I've also had to run the 1.69 critical rebuild on each GOG or Impulse version of the game, as, contrary to what both companies claim, the game is NOT properly patched.
