Strange walkmesh question
« on: June 01, 2014, 04:42:49 pm »

Hello, I have one simple question about walkmesh. I recently found a flickering in one vanilla file tdm01_p13_01 - Mines and Caverns - upstairs exit.

When looking at this tile I found the walkmesh to be really strange. Take a look on an image I made.

What is the upper part for? Is this a bug, unimplemented feature or it actually does something in game?

That is a bad walkmesh, but unless there are huge gaps in the walkable part of the walkmesh it will still work. I fixed this walkmesh in the caves override I made. There are some more like this and even more in the city interior tileset. In most cases they are tiles with exits going up or down.

<constrained by...>

As I understand it, from something OMB said, if the sides and a top mesh was better formed, it could be useful for constraining the camera as the PC neared the entrance. That is, it'll keep the camera inside the cavern with the PC instead of letting it get lost behind walls and things...

But all the mesh should, I think be connected, sharing edges, not just added in with gaps between...

<...ignorance>

It the typical half-baked stuff you see in the older tilesets and the reason why half the walkmeshes crash on export and pathfinding is a nightmare. You'll also find that numerous tilesets have conflicting walkmesh heights on the topmost verts.

oh yes. The typical "quality assurance" from back then... where the community had to fix what was called lazyness or just ignorance '<img'>

but that walkmesh looks very strange... i´m sure i had fixed that a few times... in my 10 attempts to remodel the caves...
