Unable to use new races from expansion pack
« on: May 09, 2014, 02:44:35 am »

Ok, first let me beg your indulgence, this is my first time experimenting with NVN and my first time modding a game at all. And my first time on this forum. Triple wammy.

So I downloaded and installed a module (the big one with all the new races and classes and prcs and stuff) and ran into some problems. Currently I'm unable to use or even see any of the races from the module. I can see the new base classes, but not start as any of them. I can start with the new feats and the new skills. I can level up into the new base classes.

I was wondering if it might be because I'm only on the prelude (I haven't been wanting to go farther than that because I'm wanting to customize the character I want to play). I'm trying to run just the basic NVN campaign.

Thank you all in advance.

<parking the truck...>

Remembering that NwN1 is quite old, you have to rethink how mods work a little.

That big mod (and to avoid confusion, we really do need to call it a "hak") (CEP? Q?) is basically a whole truckload of great stuff that just got delivered to the farm.

But it's still in the boxes and bales and bags...

To actually get some use out of that stuff, you need to modify the ".mod" itself in the toolset or download a mod someone else made that uses the truckload of stuff. By default, the original campaign (OC) didn't use any of this later custom stuff. It's that old model A ford with all original parts.

There's nothing to say you can't hotrod that baby! But is don't go fast nor far as it is.

If you're not quite ready to dive into building your own mods, then look at some of the great recommendations on the Module forum. I assure you you'll find something tasty to chew on :-)

First, let me say thank you again. And to make sure I'm understand, what you're saying is that downloading and installing the content (hak, my apologies for the improper terminology) isn't enough, the content has to be activated as well and the simplest way to do that is to find someone's modification to the original campaign that activates it?

I believe that the hak is prc3.3. Is that a common one? Am I even allowed to ask that here?

As to writing modules or anything along those lines, I'm far, far away from that. I'm just trying to run the game on my own computer for now.

The issue of denomination is a simple one. Neverwinter works with Modules, which are sort of packaged chapters of a storyline. The original campaign is comprised of these and numbered as chapters. These modules are made using the Aurora Toolset, the building software included in the game. Custom content material is comprised of Modules and Haks primarily. An amateur creator uses the toolset to build his own tale and setting, and sometimes uses added resources to do so. These resources like creatures, environments, effects, etc. are packaged into HAKs, which are manually added to a Module in order to be present once you start said module. The PRC pack you downloaded is comprised of several Hak packs, with added resources, but those need to be added manually to a module, as we have seen, in order for them to work properly. In the case big projetcs like the PRC, a set of very specific modifications have to be made for it to work properly. You should refer to the official support page for the PRC, which I believe is included in the download, for instructions on how to make it work properly.

Needless to say, NWN mods work very differently from more modern game mods, which are usually plug and play.

Guys, I think this is not his problem. He stated that he can see the new classes from PRC - therefore he already got it installed in module (PRC comes with program that can do this automatically and externaly without need to open toolset at all).

The problem is that those two features he wants - new races and actually choosing the custom base class are not available in vanilla NWN at all.

In past PRC used an external character creator where you could choose everything - try to look for it, but Im not sure its quite a long time Ive used this. Maybe they reworked it into subrace way.

And custom base classes are now possible to choose via NWNCX_Patch, standalone part of my unofficial patch. See here.
