Gmax Texture Resolution
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:46:09 pm »

Is there a way to make Gmax show the textures with the same resolution as ingame?

It's pretty low res. For most doings, it was ok, but now, I do have a little twitch on a wall and it's hard to correct within Gmax with such a low res:

I have been looking for an "option", but if there is one, I missed it...

Not being a 3d modeller as such I have had to refer to my copy of the gmax bible (I keep meaning to get into it but somehow something always comes up). All I can do is suggest you try playing with the options to be found in customize/viewport configuration. Hope that is of help.

I haven't found a way to get full resolution in the main viewing window, but when you unwrap the uvw map the resolution is fine.  You can line up the t-verts perfectly along the seam that way.

@3RavensMore it is an 850+ page book I bought a while ago from a commercial seller on amazon. It was published in 2003 by Wiley and the price seems to have gone up since I bought it. I know it was less than £25 at the time of purchase and now the cheapest new ones are going for more than £35 and used are less than a third of that. ISBN 0-7645-3757-1.

A cheaper alternative (and the only other purely gmax book on amazon uk) is the gmax handbook published by Charles River Media.

But enough of going off-topic. Sorry about that guys but I was asked.

Use NWNExplorer to render the model. You can find all kinds of problems far better that way. You can also activate rendering the walkmesh and see if that is okay.
If you take a close look at your pictures you can also see that the texture problem you have starts farther down than the part you marked and that it is a rather narrow face.

               Thanks people!
So, no higher resolution within the viewport(s). I was also asking, since adjusting twerts via unwrap is sometimes not so easy, if the mesh/polygones is/are not assinged to different IDs. It can be a big pain, if there is only one ID and the right twert is sometimes hard to find. (Well, it's fixed now via the unwrap-way.)
The tip of using the NWNExplorer as a renderer is great, though I found, that it's still not as high res as IG (remark: I used tga for convenience).

OT: OMG, those books seem to be more expensive here... But good to know those 2 sources! Thanks!

Before you do an uvw unwrap, just select the faces which have problems you want to fix. The unwrap will only show the t-verts of those faces then making it much easier to fix the problems.

For anyone considering buying either book. I bought the gmax bible because I had bought even longer ago the 3dsMax 8 Bible from a book clearance seller for a ridiculously cheap price and was impressed. When the gmax bible arrived I wasn't disappointed. As to the other book, I have no personal experience but there seems to be a lot of negative feedback on amazon.

@TheOneBlackRider is it more than 41.80 €? That's at the current exchange rate here in the uk.

Zwerkules, I think, I finally understood, how to adjust textures on more complex objects! Thank you.
It took me a while to figure it out. Here is my way:

---
Select the mesh.
If there is already an "Unwrap UVW" modifier in place -> Collaps To -> Yes
Editable Mesh -> Face -> select faces ("Ignore Backfacing" checked)
Having "Face" still highlighted, choose "Unwrap UVW" from the "Modifier List"
-> Edit-button ("Unwrap UVW" - Parameters)

-> Only tverts of the selected face(s) should now be shown!

If other faces have to be Unwrap-edited -> Collaps To - > Yes

---
Question: I only manage to select other faces, if I collaps the unwrapper. Is there a smarter/faster way to do this? (I only managed to do so this way.)

As to the book: OK, It says 37,61€, but not available (ama...de). 54,11€ as an import.

               That's the only way.

And sorry for not explaining all that before.  I assumed, incorrectly, that you already understood it.
