Custom Color Palettes (How?)
« on: October 14, 2013, 04:11:41 pm »

I am interested in modifying the Tattoo color palette, but am not clear on how it is done. Haven't found a tutorial. Since I have a lot on my plate I don't have time for trial and error. So let me tell you where I am at, and post my questions. I hope someone has answers or even a link to a tutorial. Some pointers would help me to proceed.

Resources:
I have found pal_tattoo01.tga and mypal_tattoo.bmp. And those for skin in the HOTU resources.
  • Are there any other resources I need to get my hands on?
  • I assume that pal_* contains the actual colors used, and that mypal_* is simply used in the GUI. Am I assuming correctly?
  • Whats with the gradient in pal_*? Is the color from left to right, and the gradient have to do with shading in game?
  • I see that these are in bands of 1 pixel heights? Is each band a color index? Top band is 0 and so on as you progress down?

What I want to achieve in order of priority:
  • I want at minimum to the first 16 colors from skin and put them in the Tatoo palette.[/b]
  • I want to redo the remaining colors to be more interesting.
Procedure:
So... I assume that I modify the files that I found as follows:
  • To achieve my first goal: I assume that I simply copy part of the pal_skin.tga and paste it over pal_tattoo01.tga. Correct?
  • To achieve the second I could try out my own colors and then experiment with a gradient. Any word of advice on the gradient?

ok so my assumptions were correct.

However I need help on understanding how to deliver this stuff. I can get the changes to pal_tattoo01.tga to register only if i put it in the override. It didn't see to work in the patch HAK or a regular HAK. I suppose BIF injection would work... but haven't tried it. The issue I have is getting the override to the players. HAK would be best. Patch HAK second best. Override is just about unacceptable.

Any word on how to trick this thing? Am I not holding my mouth right? Or are there no arcane secrets to get this trick bag to do its thing?

I have slightly modified color palettes myself for my PW, and the only way I've found to get them to work is the override folder.  I just put them in the "optional, but highly recommended" list on my site's downloads page.

Wouldn't bif injection still be just client side?  Might as well use the override folder (easier).  I haven't tried to do this myself, since I have no problems using the easier override route or haks.

that is what i suspected. thanks for confirming. I also appreciate those color charts you posted. Very useful.

BIF injection would be client side only, and so i only threw that out there as a guess at what it would take. Override is definitely easier, but I prefer to avoid it in this case.

Since I want consistency with regards to how PCs look, I've decided for a scripted work around to make the lip color agree with the skin color.

I have working custom colour palettes for leather, cloth and metal (which I should really have put on the Vault a long time ago).  For some reason, though, my custom skin, hair and tattoo palettes didn't work.  I see that these colours represent no problems for you, AD.  You put them in override, just like the others, I assume?  I'm bamboozled as to why they'd cause issues for me, then...

I do have the customized palettes in the override folder for players.  I also left a copy in my haks, don't know if that makes any difference.

I recall trying that at one stage, but only the new bmp showed up in the toolset; the underlying tga didn't change.  Thanks for the suggestion, though. '<img'>
