               Dunces & Dragons

In hopes of teaching and learning, I am trying to create a [Sponge Bob square pants] for NWN1.
It will need Tile sets,  Models: Race, Creature, Items, Placeables, etc

The theme is Dungeons and Dragons (Dunces & Dragons sponge bob cartoon)

Tiles sets:
Undersea [ worms http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=6631 can be altered ]
Bikini Bottom [ any city rural can be altered to fit theme ]
Tree Dome [ unsure any ideas would be great ]
SPNGBobInterior [ any interior can be altered to fit theme ]

Sky Boxes:
Sky boxes can be altered to show flowers, or what ever they are in the cartoon

Character Models:
Sponge Bob, Patrick Star, Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, Pearl, Larry, Mrs Puff, Plankton, Planktons wife Karen, etc
I feel the above are the major characters.  I’m still unsure weather to alter the race models or just make creatures and set appearances.  My hopes of altering models would insure the wearing of gear, im still open to debate on that.

Creatures:
Jelly fish, Alaskan Bull worm, Scallops, Oysters, Town Folk(fish, squid, sponge, etc) anything you can think of and create.

Placeables:
Krusty crab (tables, cash register boat, grill, safe, etc) anything you can think of and create.

Items:
Butter Fly net, Krabby patty, Bubbles, spatula, Ice cream, candy bar,  anything you can think of and create.

Doors:
Door types two I can think of off the bat, the ones in Krusty crab with the boat wheel handels, and wood/bamboo like ones on squidwards and sponge bobs house. And anything you can think of and create.

Music & Sound Sets:
this may take a little bit of work, but I have found those who enjoy music and sounds are very well equipped and do wondrous things.

This is just a ruff draft of what we will need to create a fun friendly NWN Sponge Bob.  I’m hoping others that enjoy, Tileseting modeling etc will join me.

You can email Greyfort_1@Hotmail.com me directly be sure to put RE:NWN SBOB so I don’t throw you away with the trash.

I hope I hear from you '<img'>

God Bless You All

I hate to be a downer, but the subject might pose copyright infringement issues and make others shy away from the project.... also I'm not sure everyone is so much of a fan to want to focus on spongebob. A similar project without a focus on a major show in production would possibly go over better.

Others have done similar work with star wars, and i have helped them.  The main thing is not making money of it.  It's more of something to expand nwn, modeling etc.  This community is very talented and I was just posting to see if anyone want to join in on the silly fun.  After all we are all having fun here.  That's what its all about.  The only thing that limits us in nwn1 is our imagination... LOL no sponge bob joke meant there '<img'>

I know almost zilch about the subject but if it's intended as a sort of tutorial thing I'd be more than happy to do one each of the creatures, items, and placeables.

Yes exactly what I was thinking, to show others how to create content and how to make what ever they can.  I believe it wold help anyone and also add to the resources.  I was going to try and do it in gmax since that 3d program is free, but anything anyone can do would be great.

Rubies: thank you I will send you a friend request and we can discuss in detail '<img'>

I won't be doing it myself, but a very large dome placeable with a circular walkmesh at its base it would be sufficient for the dome, perhaps use it like a sky dome and put a texture of the sea floor and the flower'ed sky motif they use on the show (the texture you use for this could easily be used as a skybox for the entire module).

The tree, I would take the giant tree from the city placeables, open it in a modeller, scale up the size of the foliage surfaces, then copy them in place, and mirror the copies on the xy plane, .  This way you get the effect of a full bushy tree, from above and below (for people using low camera angles). Strip out the little fence, and put it all on a flat grass texture/terrain.  Put a placeable door/transition on the tree and voila, Sandy has a home. You could make the tree a new feature on the microset, to speed loadtime. The dome's texture would handle the 'sea floor effect.

As the author of Hello Kitty's Island Adventure (A Neverwinter MMORPG for CEP 22c+) i say go for it '<img'>

As far as intellectual property goes, you should be ok as long as its a parody/fanwork, ie dont use copyrighted material.

'Image

(Then again, I'm not a copyright lawyer.)

'Image

For Squid Ones perhaps dynamic Illithids, for crabby types, Umber Hulk monster claws, or scaling to resize one.

If you're going for a more kid-friendly mod, mabey concider stuff like Child Guard: Modest Images for NWN v1.1
(I know there are modest clothing mods too, tho i forget the names)

Less violence, like bloodless combat, only "dazing" or "KOing" rather than "killing", etc might be a neat idea...

Sounds like a fun theme for sure, some great content could come out of it... (Ridable sea horses anyone? )

Be careful. It is NOT about 'if you make money off the project' or not, but strictly legal infringement and how aggressively the propery owner pursues such things. PARODY is clearly defined in the law and allowed for, but if you are not a parody in the strictest sense, you'd have no leg to stand on.

Contact a real lawyer and get advice is my best advice to you all. Even companies that once turned a blind eye to fan works (such as Star Trek/paramount) have changed in recent times.

Be well. Game on.

Copyright holders will never grant permission, particularly Viacom, which owns the rights to Squarepants.

In case you didn't know, Viacom bullied (without legal cause but with far more money to spend) the website Pimp My Snack (dot com) with cease and desists and threats of suit.  Legally, the website was fine, as it was a parody at best, and the 'Pimp my ride' was not an original expression or saying prior to Viacom Trademarking it, but in order to defend their right to use it, would have cost a small fortune, and in that case, Pimp My Snack was actually making money, complicating the matter.

Here is an amusing double-edged sword:

If you ask for permission or give notification of intent, and they decline (usually a notarized letter) or worse, send you a prememptive cease-and-desist, invoking your fair-use rights to published or copyrighted works is seriously limited, because you asked for permission.

If on the other hand, you simply produce the work without asking permission, and include a disclaimer that your work is intended as parody, and/or for educational use, and/or not-for-profit, and not intended to be confused with a work of the original copyright owner, and indicate who the original copyright holder is... they can bully you with a cease-and-desist letter, but they won't have any legal grounds to proceed.

Now, if you go ahead and do everything in the second example after asking permission, they can now sue you because they already told you not to do it, even though it is covered by fair-use... but you have established communication already, giving them a legal advantage....

Stupid eh?

Now for the record, I am not a lawyer, but I did some copyright research a few years ago, consulting with a company attorney, and this is a short form of what I recall from those exchanges, and the material they gave me to review.

So:  Don't be discouraged, go ahead with your project.  Unless make money with it or start buying ad-space on google adsense to promote your project, Viacom won't notice, and won't give a flying fig, dollars to doughnuts.
