Trouble downloading files from the Vault?

Kal - what browser are you using?

IE 8 on an older XP PC. I just tested a few with my laptop which uses Vista and didn't have any new issues either though. I did turn off Windows updates on both comps last fall due to getting tired of rolling back drivers and other stuff when an update borked something. So its not unlikely that the recent problems folk have is related to a Windows update.

I emailed Maximus the moment I realized it was happening, using the Vault's email. He hasn't responded.
Actually, the right-click, save as technique wasn't working for me either. However, today it is. *eyebrow*

Although I'm helping out on the Vault and have access to a lot of things, I have no low-level access. However, so far as I *do* know, no one is doing any work on the vault at the moment so I don't know what could have changed... strange.

As regards emailing Maximus from the vault contact link, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I think you wasted your time. I never have been able to even send myself an email through that thing :-/

I use chrome on both my old and new laptops, with iE8/9 and Firefox as backups. I can't test it from here, but as of this morning, I had no probs. But, as I said, I right-click by default.

As a web specialist and programmer for over 30 years, I'd like to add, the above posts would ALL be more useful if they included basic information like - BROWSER & OPERATING SYSTEM used as the user experience can vary. Many of the early posts in this thread do not offer such info.

Be well. Game on!

Great Tech-Support Advice in general, although this one sounds "(Resolved)". (and not necessarily OS/Browser specific)

The basic problem is the fact most web browsers want to view the file rather than saving it normally (PDFs esp)...

When downloading any "direct link" on the vault (or most any website), right click and "save as..."

While most archived files such as Zips, Rars, 7z files may download normaly, it goes without saying any PDF, Hak, MOD, Erf, Txt or other document must be "manually" saved.

From the Wiki Page -- History of the Internet

Quote
In 1982 the Internet Protocol Suite
(TCP/IP) was standardized and the concept of a world-wide network of
fully interconnected TCP/IP networks called the Internet was introduced.

So the concept of the internet as we know it now is... yes, 30 years old.  Prior to that it wasn't known as the "internet" and wasn't intended for public use.  But computers talking to each other, which face it, is the basics of the internet, has been around since the '50s.

ehye_khandee does however, have a point.  If someone comes to you and says it doesn't work, a little more information would be nice.

Ican tell you that left-clicking on a .exe, .zip or .rar works fine for me, but when trying to left-click a .hak file mentioned in another post as not working causes a problem and attempts to display the file as a text file.  I am using Firefox 13.0.1 on Windows XP SP3.

Everything is working fine for me on Win 7. I wonder if something on the Vault has finally outdistanced XP

Nope, after some further testing.  It appears to be a browser issue.  When trying to download with anything based on the Gecko engine (Firefox) it attempts to open it as a text file.  When using the other engines, Trident (IE),  Webkit (Chrome) or Presto (Opera) there is no problem.

I have noticed NWN specific files on the vault always seem to show up as text files. they actually show up as Winamp files on my computer. once put into the nwn folder where they belong they work fine, they just show up as mp3 files.

That's probably because you let winamp associate itself with .Mod files '<img'>

I use firefox all the time and have no problems downloading, do you have the latest version and latest other support. I unassociate you mod files just open your command prompt and type assoc .mod= none
And you should be good, if you want too.

Yes, I have the latest versions of 10 different browsers, and the only ones that display this behavior are the Gecko based, or can render using the Gecko engine.

This tip assoc .mod= none does not work for me.  What OS are you using?

I have every version of windows from XP, vista, windows 7 and vista and windows 7.

For Xp go to windows explorer tools / folder options / file types down to .mod delete and reboot.  Sorry about all this, that what I get for going by memory and not going back and looking at my xp version hehe.

Do you have the latest java, .net I doubt though affect the download but just some wild thoughts.

Do you have your winrar set to always ask under applications in Mozilla? (just checking some of my settings, that I have that seem to work that might be helpful.)
