Would you like and support a NWN Nexus site?
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:41:42 pm »

I thought I'd bring over this discussion from the NWN2 boards, since it's been mentioned multiple times that NWN1 people should made aware of the idea, but nobody bothered to ask yet.

Origin: http://social.biowar...2/index/9196246

The basic idea came up when there was no news and updates on the NWN Vault anymore and people started getting worried. For now the problems seem to be solved, Maximus is updating again, but some of us (me included) still like the idea of a Nexus site as an alternative/backup/advertising method, for multiple reasons like getting some fresh blood in. Not to replace the Vault, mind you. Most of you probably know the Nexus sites if you played DA or any TES or Fallout games, for those who don't have a look at, say, the Skyrim Nexus.
I don't want to get into it further here, but maybe some of you want to hop over to the thread, read up and state your opinion.

                <feeling his age...>

'Posted

I remember the Neverwinter Nexus...
Loved that place.
Not surprising since I was co-founder, I suppose.
So much potential. So many grand ideas. *sigh* <psst, boss. they're talking about a new one.>
Oh.
Well, I do wish you well, then.

Honestly, though, between:

The Vault,
The Neverwinter Nights info site
The NwN Wiki

and about a dozen good tutorial forums (CTP, Project Q, etc) I think there is quite a bit of redundancy.

Still, if you have the energy and the juices are flowing, go for it :-)

<...and looking it>

To be clear, the new Nexus site would be mainly a place for hosting and distributing mods, not an info/wiki/resource. To overcome issues with the vault and maybe attract a larger playerbase again. You can look at the existing Skyrim/Fallout/TES/DA Nexus sites to get the picture, they are all working the same way. It's not about making another new NWN community site, it's more about using the largest/best known place for modding for NWN too. The advantage would be a larger audience, good support, and mainly ease of use for uploaders and downloaders due to automated processing of mods and good servers.

It's a system which includes "installers" for the content, via NMM

I think this is the real feature that sets it apart, even though initially it would just be content, and the "manager" really needs to have some NWN specific features.

Hmm... the installer (NMM) isn't really important IMO... what I like is the fast stable site with lots of features that makes it just easier to up- and download, plus more advertising possibilities and a more modern feeling. Plus it doesn't depend so heavily on one person moderating everything.
I don't see the NMM ever being ported to NWN, simply because it was only made to manage Bethesda games. NWN(2) stuff would be downloaded like before, unless someone makes a special download tool for NWN(2) too. In that case you should include Mac/Linux support too though, since the NWN games are multiplatform.

That is my intention... ( NMM is open source, and we already have the talents in the NWN2 and NWN1 community to do something much better, just using the NWN2 datafile accessor library which skywing wrote will give us many more options )

Ya, saw what you wrote in the main thread. A tool like the NMM would be awesome really, and if it's only to keep track of all your files (I as a builder and player had serious issues keeping my mods up to date and sorted out, it takes a lot of discipline which I don't have). I'd even offer help, though I'm no programmer, could only suggest or do some things on the graphics side of things... '<img'>
