NWN and Blender
« on: July 12, 2011, 03:30:44 am »

               Greetings,

So I have come back to NWN once again and have a greater skill set for scripting and modeling.

My program of choice to model is Blender 2.5.

Is there anyone out there that uses Blender to make content for NWN?

Are there conversion programs to go from NWN .mdl to .blend and back? (Please don't refer me to Neverblender. I can't figure out how to use that. Plus it was designed for a much older version of blender and seems to have gone cold way back in 2003 or so.)

I know gmax is used alot from what I can see in my searches. Is that the best way to deal with models?

I am unfamilure with gmax and tutorials for it seem to be lacking now days.

Can anyone help me out with getting things in/out of belnder? I am bursting with ideas and have no outlet at the moment.

Neverblender is the only tool I know of for NWN and Blender. It is unfortunate that Neverblender didn't go anywhere.

Understandably Blender can't import/export straight from/to Blender. But blender can handle a bunch of diffrent formats. With 2.5 I know you can import the following file types:
COLLADA (.dae)
Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg)
Standford (.ply)
STL (.stl)
3D Studio (.3ds)
Wavefront (.obj)
X3D Extendsible (.x3d/.wrl)

Actually, the story didn't quite end with NeverBlender.  About 6 months ago I was talking with a very talented modder who has long-since moved on to other games, mostly to thank him for this outstanding but overlooked robe from the NWVault.  The way he'd put it together, basically modularizing multiple skin meshes was very cool, IMO.
Anyway, that and all other work he did for NWN 1 was done in entirely in Blender'<img'>

NewByPower was kind enough to take the time to dig up the python scripts (built on NeverBlender, I believe) and pass them along to me.  I had intended to test these out and see how seaworthy they were with the current version of Blender but Blender and my machine do not seem to like each other much at all and I couldn't proceed.

However, I'll pass them onto you and any other Blender users who might be able to check out how well they work with the current build.  The scripts seem to detail much-expanded functionality over NeverBlender.

You or anyone else who can test these, please post back with your results!

Here is NewByPower's submission page at the Vault.  I believe everything was done end-to-end in Blender.  Pretty impressive, no?

               Wow. Your right, nice stuff.

I have to thank you OTR, this looks like what I need, I have no idea what to do with them right now, but maybe I can figure it out. If I could model in blender, I think I can make something happen. I can't wait to try it out.

Any tips on what I might do with these scripts?

Well, looking them over it looks like they're meant to run in Blender....like plugins of a sort, or like MaxScript if you've used GMax/Max.  Both of them should bring up GUI's and then allow some basic import/export options.   Other than that, you might want to look at how NeverBlender was activated in Blender, because the scripts appear to have been derived from that.

Well so far what i can tell, I can't run these with Blender 2.5.

I loaded them both up in blender 2.49 and I get the GUI interface to show up.
I selected file and import but the script errors out.

I tried exporting the default cube to mdl. That seemed to have created a file, although when I look the mdl file using NWNExplorer (reborn) the model info comes up but doesn't show the cube in the 3d view.

Im a complete noob running scripts with Blender so this is all trial and error on my part.

Swing and a miss......
