               You can edit them in notepad, but that is almost worthless.  They are files designed to be edited with 3dsmax or Gmax.

               If you are actually editing these mdl files in gmax or 3dsmax, you really should use This which is NWmax.  Note that on that vault page are two different versions, one for Gmax, and one for 3dsmax.  If you are using Gmax, you MUST grab the correct version and read the readme.txt file for instructions.

NWMax is what 98% of the modelers use to import/export the files around here.  It has much more power than the default files that Bioware provided.

                <waggling his hand...>

Yes and no. Mebbeso, mebbenot. <sigh>

Neverblender by WWWWolf was a great start in that direction, but the scripts do not work with 2.4 or 2.5 Blender.

More encouraging is the work by Jester_v01 for NwN2's .mdb format. At least that is in active development.

I have not touched Blender since I got my veteran's license for 3DS Max, however, so I can't tell you how much help it will be with NwN1 .mdl format.

If you do find something that works, please let us know :-)

               I'm using a simple pluginn for Max, i had found it here: http://www.cadalyst....mport_max5.html

This plugging is as easily to use like import or export a 3DS file, unfortunately it don't works in  versions over MAX 5. The discovering of this plugging was the key that allowed me to become in a modder.

I had tried NWmax, But for me it seems too complicate; It's any manual for it anywhere, thanks?

               @mandy2michael -There are some scripts based off of Neverblender which were created to load NWN 1 models into and export out of Blender but they do not work with Blender 2.49b or newer.  I'm not exactly sure which version of Blender you'd need to run them.  Probably something circa 2008.  If you have experience working with Python and/or writing simple Blender scripts,  you could probably update them to run on a more recent version.  More information can be found here.  You might also qualify for a free limited license from Autodesk, though, for a copy of the newest 3DS Max.

@Shemsu-Heru - You're a Max 5.1 user?  Did you know the official Bioware export scripts work under Max 5?  You can download them here.  They may conflict with MDL-Suite, which is what you're using right now, I believe.  They don't have a way to import NWN models so you could use MDL-Suite (if it doesn't conflict) or possibly something like Wayland's import scripts on the Vault.  It does work wonderfully with Velstools and Tile Set Creator, though.  I only use them to export NWN models.  I'm not sure if I've ever loaded them.  Maybe load them with someone else and delete and re-create the model base or something like that.  Anyway, they're fast and very solid, though admittedly old.  For instance, some of the .nam files aren't updated with the latest animation names like the extra custom looping animations added up until 1.69.  You might give them a try sometime.  IMO they're a real treat if you use Max 5 but everyone has different tastes so it may not be for you.  You can also download the 3ds Max DDS Plug-ins from NVidia to allow you to use DDS textures in Max 5.  Not Bioware DDS, regular DDS.

               @OldTimeRadio: Thanks, but my plugging allows me to import and export mdl files without using any script. Actually, at the beginning i only used MAX5, now at days i use also MAX8, but i still using MAX5 and this nice plugging, for import and export mdl. After all, there is no great differences between the different versions of MAX, even thought that the older versions consume less resources to my old poor machine; The important is the person behind not the tools...
