Static Placeables and Shadows
« on: April 15, 2011, 05:02:48 am »

Is it possible to create a mdl that when used as a static placeable will still cast shadows?

Conversely... is it possible to create an invisible mdl that still has geometry which casts shadows (would not be a static placeable)? Or even an invisible mdl that still has geometry, but as a static placeable would blend with the area's wok mesh.

If so, how?

I need a table that will support spawned items (typically a static placeable), and also cast a shadow (typically non-static).

Static placeables seem to be casting shadows just fine over here.  Do you have Enable Environment Shadows turned on in your video options?

Yes, just uncheck "Render" on the Aurora Trimesh modifier for that geometry.  If you have "Render" unchecked but leave "Shadows" checked on the same Aurora Trimesh modifier, the geometry will not render but will still cast a shadow.

Or even an invisible mdl that still has geometry, but as a static placeable would blend with the area's wok mesh.

A placeable need not have any geometry at all.  It can just have a PWK.  Or, it can also have geometry which is rendered invisible by turning off "Render" on the Aurora Trimesh modifier on it.  Either way, the PWK will still merge with the WOK, preventing movement.

If so, how?

Does the question still apply after those answers?

All of the responses I just gave were based on tests carried out with with a hand-made placeable (gotta keep it fun!) and two other placeables- an easel and a corpse wagon.

Truly? I'm surprised as I do have Enable Environmental Shadows checked and none of my static placeables cast shadows.

Perhaps it is a videocard issue. My videocard does suck. AND static placeables are supposed to cut down on overhead....

If this is just an issue with my videocard then I'm not concerned at all.

Thanks for the reply.
