OHS Henchman (An Idea)
« on: February 01, 2011, 05:19:53 pm »

               More of an active one at this point... I currently use this from time to time when I get stuck & need supplies... However I think it would be very cool if this could be implimented as an automatic measure instead of going through all these various steps... The idea is the supply boy... What would be nice is to be able to summon the supply boy & give him items to sell since there is no way to give gold that I am aware of... He would then be given a list of items needed... And them would dissapear for several hours depending... And then return with the supplies... In essence it would be almost like having a merchant appear when summoned... Is there already a script like this that would work with the OHS Henchman system? Anyways this is how I accomplish the task at hamd currently using the OHS...

Supply Boy.......................................................................

* Create a supply boy name him whatever... Supply Boy is good...
* Make him something like a first level human or any race/class you choose...
* Play any module and rest to get link boy...
* Go through the registration process...
* Then if your in a saved game open it and ask for a new henchman from the link boy...
* Choose the supply boy...
* Pay the first time join price...
* He will have maybe 100 gold now...
* If you need items you will have to supply him with items to sell & get gold since you cannot give henchmen gold... Gems and necklaces are good... Magic items are better... Use your head...
* Once hes supplied summon Ohum and have him remember you as you are now...
* Have the supply boy leave the party as if he is on a quest for your items you need... Make sure you have him go home because you dont want him lingering around... Hes on a quest after all...
* Save the game (if you choose to cheat then dont save) You lose nothing that way...
* Go through the way of heroes as a new game with supply boy & go through the ritual in the Temple to get all the items he has when Ohum saved him to the database...
* Now start a new game... Best to use something like Novice to Epic Char Creator that has all the supplies to choose from... Make sure you select the most recent character in the vault... You may want to delete the old records to keep this tidy...
* Using the supply boy sell the items given him...
* Purchase the items you need...
* Rest & get the link boy...
* Ask for the Magistrate & re-registar...
* Then just go to load up your game...
* Ask link boy for new henchmen & choose supply boy...
* He will join without a fee & you can get your supplies from his inventory...
* In order to keep from cheating you have to do this next...
* Take everything you gave him back except his registration...
* Ask Ohum to remember you as you are now...
* Remove supply boy from the party...
* Save game...
* Open new game OHS Way of Heroes with supply boy...
* Go through the ritual in the Temple to ensure he has the updated inventory (nothing but the registration & gold left)
* Re-register with the Masgistrate at the Magistrate's office...
* Then you may load the game and when you need supply boy just ask the link boy for a new henchman... Repeat the above starting with: (If you need items you will have to supply..)

As you can see its very tedius and leaves it open to cheat.. But thats up to you of course...

               Hmm. This discussion doesn't really belong in the CC forum but as we are here ...

What you are doing is really quite ingenious but I agree that it does seem a very roundabout way to get access to a merchant. I did once try giving linkboy the ability to open a store himself (it's simple enough to script as an additional dialogue option) but I dropped the idea because when I playtested it, I found that it spoiled the balance of various modules. It made things too easy.

To me, being "out there" adventuring, making do with the resources available, should feel different from being "at home" in a town or village where there are traders, temples and so on to interact with. If I run out of arrows or potions in the middle of the wilderness, well, that's life (or not, as the case may be). But there's usually the option to break off the expedition and trudge back to town. Sometimes. Not always, though. If not, well, it teaches you to be better prepared next time.

               I ended up ditching this process and like you mentioned created a merchant... The supply boy as I stated above... All he has is potions and healing kits at this time... I might script it to be more balanced where he will only have a finite supply per module... If thats possible...

Oh and since your here I might as well ask your permission to expand on this wonderful system & release what I have done at some point... I have other ideas of giving more control over the henchmen in various aspects like picking up treasure & spellcasting etc...

Where would I find more information on the various scripts and what they do per say? Do you have any programming notes handy or is it all in the remarks? Also I should make sure no one else has already done some of this work by asking where it might be because its not in the vault if it does exist...

               No, for the reasons given above, I am not in favour of the modifications you are proposing.
