How about them trees! hey?
« on: January 18, 2011, 10:05:22 pm »

               Creating the following Big Tree, I can't help but feel Big trees have been missing in NWN... how about you?

I'm personally surprised at the visual effect which is quite positive... I mean for me at least.

               I agree, both on the former lack of big trees and on the positive effect of your model. Thumbs up for this awesome idea! '<img'>

               Looks good.  Most of the big trees I've seen are too vertical and look like a cylinder.  This one has a nicer 3D feel.  Not quite gnarled but still has personality.  One could have a lot of fun making variations on that.  Convicted criminals hanging from a noose, tree houses, etc.

               @Olivier

Thanks and I'm glad you like it

@OldTimeRadio

At first I created this tree to add a Door at the ground level to replace the original rather cut short existing model available in the forest tileset called a "Shack", but while it is still a WIP, I tested it
as a placeable and thought... "Hmm, hey nice!" and took the screenies for show. Now I'm thinking
about making a few variations in shape. I'd definitely make a straight one but not too cylindrical.

Anyhow, I'm glad you liked it.

               This looks superb and the more the merrier.

This model is very distinctive so you could not put too many in an area, a bland round straight tree could be rotated and used much more frequently, but early days. I have a forest in one thing I'm working on that I described in the previous mod as having "trees the size of balista towers", so I look forward to see more.  '<img'>

               More trees options are always desirable - especially if the foliage fades, and only the trunk casts a shadow. Hint hint. I'd like to see that tree of yours with the door. The "shack" always needed improvement in my opinion.

Regarding other large tree models: There are some large but cylindrical ones from NWN2 that thegeorge brought over. Tirnanog2 also has some giant trees. The halloween tree in project Q is also nice. I happen to like the other trees in project Q as well because their colors go well with the TNO tileset - and also work in six's wild tilesets (wildlands and wild woods)

               Nice looking tree, it almost looks like it is dancing.  Or in that first shot, left side, doing the limbo.  '<img'>

Well yeah, the foliage will not cast shadows for the simple reason that NWN does not cast "Alpha Channel" shadows otherwise I'd definetly have them cast shadows. About fading, There is no need to have the foliage fade as at the size of the tree and the height of the foliage, the foliage is hardly ever in the way of view while
at the same time it is most of the time visable slightly just enough to give an impression of fullness in the area.

1- I personally find anything from NWN2 outright lame.
2- I haven't seen the trees from PQ as I haven't checked the updated content from that project in a while, care to show some screenshots?
3- With all do respect to Six which I respect much, is he still blasting his textures with an insane amount of black doted "Noise"?... he kows how I feel about that  '<img'>

Nice. I didn't realize that you had hit the sweet spot for height. That works really well.

But that is not true of all of the art assets. Some of it is very bad, I agree. But other assets are very high quality. I am going for a more natural looking setting (thinkmore TNO tileset versus Standard rural tileset)  in my current mod so the high res textures in some of the NWN2 trees works well. I have been using Tirnanog and Xeno's plants - but some of that stuff is too stylized in the vein of early NWN for what I am going for. Thats why I like it.

In my view, its best to pick the assets that work with what you are building. It looks like you are making a tree that will work well the NWN's standard trees, which is a good way to go since many people use the standard assets.

I can't at the moment. Too busy. I am at version 1.3 however. And project Q has been there for a long time. I'd imagine you have the trees. They are the same trees that they updated the TNO tileset with.

His textures do have a desaturated look. But that works well for his tilesets which blend with the TNO tileset nicely. I haven't looked close enough however at the textures to see if the textures are covered with black pixel noise. thinking back over it, I think he does what you are referring to in the stone work textures. It gives them that "painted miniature" look popular with the old Games Workshop mini's.

Anyway, I like the look for what i am going for. It definitely would not work for a high fantasy, high magic type of adventure. But I like the gritty look.
