BIF Editor madness.
« on: November 27, 2010, 07:30:52 pm »

So, I downloaded the BIF Editor tool which de-compiles/compiles files into/out of the main BIF thingies for NWN. I replaced three .plt files and compiled the Textures_02.bif, just as the read me instructs. However, whenever I go to the toolset to check my new plt's, I find the ones that should have been replaced. So, I use NWN Explorer to check what the plt's are, and they are definitely the ones I replaced. In-game tests show the original plt's instead of mine. Also, if I go into the Texture Packs section in the NWN Explorer, the plt's in there are the original ones, not mine.

What the deuce?

When you recompile a .bif file with bifeditor, the extension of the recompiled one is ".bif.new" so you have to rename/delete the old   .bif   file and rename the new one from   *.bif.new   to   *.bif

Another thing to keep in mind is that the files in the bif's are the lowest in the food chain.  If you have the same file anywhere else in the resources lists they will override the bif's. The Override Folder, the module and haks are all higher up the food chain.   I really do not like the Idea of messing with the bif's. At least not the ones put out by bioware. Just keep in mind that is you do not know what you are doing you can cause inconsistances in the game that others will not be able to help you with unless they know what you have done.

Yes, I know about the .NEW thingie... which actually wouldn't work with NWN Explorer. As I mentioned, NWN Explorer does show my replaced PLT's inside the Textures_02.bif, which would definitely mean they ARE placed in it. However, in-game and in the toolset the old models show. This would mean the Textures_02.bif is being overriden by something, which is nto the case in terms of haks or override folder.

On the other hand, yes, I know BIFs are the lowest resources, though that is relative, since several PLT files won't work from hak or override folder unless you erase the ones in the BIF... Which is exactly why I'm messing with such...

I did it once before, I mean, erase the undesired files, but since I had to make a clean install, and the erasing was a long time ago, I can't remember how I did it in the first place. I didn't use the BIF Editor, that's for sure, since I didn't replace anything, simply erased the undesired files...

Anyway, hope anyone knows what the deuce is going on, or how I may simply erase the files, without me having to replace/compile, etc...

The texture packs are stored as .erfs within a subdirectory of NWN, and will override the data in the main .bifs if they are selected in the game options.

That's what I was thinking, Six x3! But, what is there to do then? I mean, I'm pretty sure I erased those pesky PLT's back when I first installed the game, but it's been years, so I can't remember what tool I used, and exactly where the files I erased were... was it Zoligato's Viewer?... Anyone?

By the way, and not related to topic... whatever happened to Q Project? Is it kaput?

Well, either turn off the texture pack in the game options, or use the erf editor to add your custom .plt to the A texture pack too.

We're slowly but surely getting around to releasing an update. Hopefully before the year is out.

Thanks for the aid, Six! I just found an old backup of my previous game folder, from before the clean install, and simply copy/pasted the texture pack. All's good!

All my best to the Q Team! You've provided lots of high quality content for us to enjoy. I also hope you can take a peek at my other topics in the "technical" section of the forums, since I've been discussing some issues to which I haven't found a solution yet; any insight you may share would certainly be appreciated!

Project Q is far from kaput. For a look at what I've been upto for the project, check out my project page for Neverwinter Realms CC - everything in the project gallery is going into Q v1.4.
