Tileset Advice: Estates?
« on: November 15, 2010, 01:07:51 pm »

I'm working on an area for my next module and thought that I'd try asking for some advice from the talented individuals who frequent this forum. The design calls for a city district (called the "Castle District"), which contains the entrance to a castle that serves as one of the central locations of the adventure. The surrounding district should consist for the most part of wealthy estates, and with roads through it that lead to other districts of the city.

I'm currently using Wild Woods, Wildlands, LR Rocky Mountains, and Seasonal Forest as the major tileset extensions for the module. I had originally thought of using TNO for this area, and it has excellent tiles available in it for the castle entrances (especially now after the assistance I received recently fixing up the drawbridges). However, on looking through the available house tiles, I don't see any that I think have the right kind of look for creating what I have in mind for estates, since they typically look a bit worn and small for the purpose. (Something like the Manor tiles in Six's Wild Woods would work, but this needs to be a city area with available castle tiles.)

Does anyone have a suggestion of a tileset that might combine these two elements effectively, or alternatively a good "estate home" placeable or two that might do the trick? If these could be in the same tileset that would be great; otherwise, I'll have to adjust the design to break this into two adjoining areas. I suppose I could probably handle creating estates with the standard Bioware city exterior tileset, but it'll look rather jarringly different from most of the other city areas around it that will be using newer cc.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice on this!

The NWN2 placeables found in thegeorges hak or CEP work awesome. If you log into our world and take a quick five minute tour and see what one of our builders did in Silverymoon you will see some excellent stuff with these placeables.

EDIT: And while I am not trying to promote our world this way just pointing out you can get some idears there. Please do not take this as a trying to spam your thread with advertising stuff as I did not build this area but was very impressed with it and it fits what you asked about very well especially in the Castle District.

@TSMDude: no problem, I didn't take it as spam. I don't see these placeables in CEP, but I'm using the pre-updater version of CEP 2.2. I'd decided not to update Sanctum to use any later CEP content, since I don't want to commit myself to doing endess CEP / PQ / Sanctum content merges. And I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with using content taken from NWN2. But I will check these out -- thanks!

@Calvin: thanks! Functionally, at least, that's more like what I had in mind. And you reminded me that Gothic Estates had also been integrated into CTP, which the modules are also already set up to use. I would have to separate the Castle Gate and Estate areas, though. I'll also have to give some thought as to whether it'll go with module's setting and be consistent stylistically with the other tilesets, particularly the adjoining ones.
