WotC's D&D Community Forums Closing

"Choosing to retire a former foundation of our community was not an easy decision, but we feel that we must adjust our communications structure to reflect where conversations about Wizards of the Coast games are taking place.

 

Social media has changed significantly over the last ten years, and discussions about games aren't exclusive to company-hosted forums. The majority of community conversation takes place on third-party websites (such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and many other fantastic community-run websites), and it is up to us to evolve alongside our players.

 

We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information you want to retain from the Community Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their content, and we recognize that given our forum's vibrant user base and extensive history, this may take time. Any information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.

 

Thank you to all of our past and current forum users. You helped build our community into what it is now, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you on our many active social platforms."

 

Given the occasional discussions on these boards about whether or not to migrate to the new vault (or when), I thought this information important.  Probably many have seen this or know about it.  I'm sure Bioware has taken note and passed it around internally.   It's hard to believe that a property like D&D, with as much detailed conversation that occurs about it and the rabid following it has, can't make a community forum worth its while.  

 

I've advocated for a bigger presence among our community on Reddit in the past, where many gamers already congregate as a way to (re)introduce players to NWN and serve as one of the moderators for the NWN subreddit there.  I wouldn't suggest it as a replacement for this site (the format isn't set up for diverse topics), but rather as a showcase/recruiting platform.

 

The nice thing is that WotC gave the community a month get salvage the content.

I´m not sure if i want to use reddit... from what i have read in the past about their super weirdo femrad CEO slandering and accusing innocent people of crimes no definately not!

Looks like enworld.org has set up a WotC Emergency Evacuation Lifeboat. EN World is where it's always been at, anyway. I love reading the Play-By-Post topics, though despite being a member I've never been brave enough to partake of them.

 

There's also the Paizo forums (they made "3.5", which showed up WotC but divided the community down the middle).

               Iirc the bioware forums are about to be merged with EA's origin forums (they share the same login now anyway). Given that this is a sales platform, i figure EA might have a higher interest in keeping the forums running, and a lesser interest in cutting an unimportant subsection of their forums for fear we might spill into the main part to make a ruckus '>


I guess the way this is going, they may expand their origin forum to have subsections for every sold game, just like steam does.

               If I move anywhere it will be the community run nwvault.org. Not only are the one of use, they are us. Maybe possibly enworld but that would be it.
