Best starting class for a new player
« on: August 24, 2015, 11:48:59 am »

So, here's the situation.

Soon (or not so soon) I'll have an alpha version of the module I'm building ready for release. A friend of mine has expressed his desire to try it out when it's possible. The thing is, he's not much of an RPG player, it's just not a genre he generally enjoys. The closest he got to RPGs was with MMORPGs, WoW, to be more precise.

Anyway, Neverwinter Nights is not necessarily a game he might enjoy. Still, I don't want to tell him "nah, you won't like it", quite the opposite, I'd like him to try it, and perhaps change his mind towards it.

I've been wondering about what class I should recommend him to play. I wanted it not to be too complicated, since he knows nothing about D&D at this point, so I decided against spellcasting-focused classes. Similarly, I feel that he wouldn't enjoy playing a rogue, since this class is the least suited for combat, which is probably the most important thing for him.

On the other hand I'd also rather not let him play a fighter, since, let's be honest, it's a pretty boring class. Not the best one to spark someone's interest in the game.

I've come to the conclusion that a paladin/pdk build could probably be the best (I've buffed PDK's abilities in my module), since that would give him a small selection of spells and feats to use, probably just enough to keep battles interesting, but not enough to make him confused.

Still, I'd rather ask you guys, since you might have a different opinion, or perhaps you even invited some friends yourselves and know what new players generally like and what they don't. What do you think? '<img'>

I always recommend clerics because they're made of win. But he would need to know at least a little bit about spells and feats. Otherwise Paladin or Fighter seem the obvious choices. If you want him to succeed though, give him some decent starter gear. Any class can succeed depending on how they're kitted out.

Any class can succeed, but some are more difficult to master than others.

Additionally, rogues have it rough in most environments.

A Rogue/Fighter multiclass might be a good choice. This can be played as if it were a fighter in most situations, while having access to a wide variety of additional talents to make things more interesting, and does not depend on understanding how the game's spell system works to be effective. A Ranger might work too, as it is not that different from playing a Fighter, but does have a few additional talents to add some flavor.

I agree that a Rogue / Fighter build would be just what you're looking for. I'd be happy to make one for you / him, but I'd need more information, like what kind of gear is available, what is the maximum level that player will reach in the module, STR-based or DEX-based, stealthy or not, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion and your offer, but I think I can create a suitable build, just needed an idea. '<img'> After all, I know the best about the module's gear, monsters and ruleset modifications.

My first class was Fighter->Arcane Archer, and it was pretty straightforward and easy to play. More fun than pure Fighter too, since you do have some basic spells, at least, and the gameplay is more interesting than just "get close and kill stuff".
