NWN diamond edition won't install- Win7 x64
« on: May 13, 2015, 11:31:34 am »

Newbie here. As the title says, I'm trying to install NWN on an x64 machine.

I can't run any patches.. because I can't get it installed, so advice to run the x64 patches are of no current value.

Symptom: when I run the setup.exe ... the installer appears with the NWN eye logo, and the installer bar graph fills up, then it all disappears. It does NOT diminish to the taskbar, and the process is not running according to the Task Manager.

Thank you, any help appreciated!

Cancel the auto run when it starts, navigate to the cd folder and run the installer as an admin in compatibility mode.

I ran the setup.exe as Admin with WinXP-SP2 compatibility. No Joy.

I've also tried it with the AV Off and UAC disabled. No joy.

Tried installing it in Safe Mode, No joy.

Thanks for your help anyway, Iceywind.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

nwn runs well on w7 64 bit (its what I use). but you have to install it on the C: drive.

perhaps the drive partition format is a problem, mine works with NTFS,

but I suspect GPT could cause mayhem (just an intuition, not tried in GPT mode).

if you have access to an older computer,

you can install nwn on C:  make a copy of the entire never winter folder on a USB stick

and copy it on your w7 machine on C: after that, launch the program with the executable in

the folder and make a critical rebuild if needed.

PS: sorry for the ugly post format. writing this from a !#$&!! tablet ;-)

PPS: Search "technical support" forum section for more info.

Thanks CaveGnome!! That suggestion worked perfectly!

I have 3 old XP machines, so I just loaded NWN on one of them and copied it over. I had NO idea that kind of thing would work. Now I'll modify the .ini file so it will run in a window and I'll be good to go!

You absolutely do NOT have to install it on the C drive.  I've had it working great on non-C: drives on 3 different computers (2x 64-bit windows 7 and current laptop is windows 8).

Biggest thing I find to work is to make sure it's not in program files or program files(x86) directories, along with previous suggestions (disable UAC and run .exe files as admin).

If i suggested a C: install, it is because I know a lot of programs from this era are picky with the install location and I don't trusted every nwn software having the access path softcoded. It was a precaution measure. Now if you tested extensively and all nwn parts worked as intended on other drives that's great news and this will undoubtedly help more people enjoy our favorite game.
